Question about 2003 Land Rover Discovery

1 Answer

Hi...I am looking at purchasing a Disco and wanted some help from anyone familiar with repair and repair cost. It is a 2000 Discovery II with 90K miles and this is what is said to be wrong with it per the current owner; "When I purchased this vehicle it had a slight miss, I was afraid to drive off to far so my husband purchased me a truck. I did have it looked at and they diagnosed as a valve not completely closing on the #6 cylinder. They also ran a scope into the cylinder & said there was NO damage to the cylinder wall. Can anyone tell me approximate cost of fixing this problem so I can determine if it is worth buying? I appreciate any help! Thanks in advance.

A mechanical misfire like this can be very pricey. a valve job may do the trick, but you also may need a valve train rail which is a common failure. get a diagnosis from someone who knows rovers.

What can cause fuel to burn rapidly in a 2000 land rover discovery

I own a landrover disco 2 and even without problems it only gets about 8mpg.Try giving it a complete tune up.If it's a 4.0 like mine the upper left intake has to be removed to change the plug wires.DIY will run you about 150$ just to change the plug wires with a new Upper Intake gasket!

Where is the fuel filter located on 2000 Land Rover Discovery II

I suggest that you visit the autozone.com website and register the vehicle. It doesn't cost anything and will give you access to an online repair manual for the vehicle. Pretty handy. There should be information available on the fuel system and replacing the fuel filter there. Hope this helped and best wishes.

Hi,

Hi Chamer,

Could be sticking exhaust valves. This sounds like like what you describe and it does rob you of power without generating lots of heat. For Series II Disco's, this is a common problem and requires a valve job to repair. Also can return after every 50,000 miles, depending on how you drive, where you drive and what fuel you purchase. Use the highest Octane you can find (94 at Sunoco). Better for your Disco and the environment too!

Regarding brake work, I use Raybestos on my Series I. No complaints. The series II has wider rotors (lucky you) so you'll have to see if Raybestos carries them. Vented rotors are better - allowing to cool down faster and better stopping ability. If money was a concern, do the brakes yourself! A valve job will run you about $2000US and a complete brake job (at the dealer) will probably be the same. $4000 is too much for me to handle in one bite!

If you do the brakes yourself, expect the following approximate costs: pads $100(fr&bk); rotors $100 each, $15 brake fluid (perform a complete flush); plus your time (0$).

Check around online for the best prices and locations. There are ways of saving and this is one of website I use often:

I found vented rotors for your Disco for $69. Far less than the $300 from your dealer.

Hope i helped.

Thanks.

DISCOVERY II 1999

9 times out of 10 it is the ABS modulator for the disco II's. That being said, i hope you're sitting down...only a LR shop or a shop with auto logic can fix it and it's gonna cost you... A new modulator costs around 2k. if you can get the dealer to install a remanufactured one, it will cost you around 700 for the part and about 3-4 hours of labor.
