Question about 1990 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

Not able to start my 1990 Ford Taurus, turning over, but seems to be fuel problem. How can I check the trouble codes on this to help me diagnose?

Thanks for your response. This is the first time someone suggested the timing belt. Everyone else suggested either the air filter, fuel filter, catalytic converter being clogged, spark plugs, or plug harness, and of course fuel pump. You cannot hear the fuel pump, but it actually started once or twice yesterday, so seems to be priming. I think this still boils down to getting the trouble codes, which is new to me, so will have to get a scanner and try to figure it out. I have no clue how to initiate or read the dash blinking.

Are you sure that it is fuel problems? Turn key to the on position and listen for a buzzing sound. That buzzing sound is the fuel pump. If you do not hear it then the fuel pump has gone out or maybe it's a fuse to the fuel pump. If the pump is working the it could be the timing belt. Check it out.

Cannot diagnose or run temp. Sealer for what i believe is head blown because car wont start it cranks but sputters and kills battery?

Sounds like head gasket again, but may be more serious this time. Overheating is not something to take lightly.

Pull plugs. crank. Water come out of cylinders? Head gasket. Possible cracked block or head this time, too. I'd be looking at a replacement engine.

My 1990 ford taurus keeps dying

The FIRST thing you need to do is STOP REPLACING PARTS until you can properly diagnose the vehicle and PROVE what is causing the engine to stall and not start. This should be done by testing the systems involved - NOT by replacing parts to see if it works....

When it stalls, what is missing? Does it have spark at the spark plugs? Does it have fuel pressure? Does it have injector pulse? Have you scanned the computer for fault codes? If you have, what codes did you get? These questions should all be answered LONG before any parts should be replaced.

I smell gas a little in my 1990 ford taurus any idea where to start looking???

First, take a quick sniff of the exhaust when the engine is idling. If you smell gas there, check your spark plugs and wires to eliminate misfires, then check for leaky fuel injectors (leaking excess fuel into a cylinder).

If the exhaust smells normal, you'll need to inspect the fuel delivery system. The most probable place for a leak would be the fuel lines under the car; it's old enough that a line could be rusted through and have a pinhole leak somewhere. If you suspect a spot but want to verify it by turning on the engine to pressurize the line, be sure to wear safety goggles. You don't want gasoline sprayed in your eyes.

My 1990 ford taurus lost power while siting at a light, also shut off, started back up but vibrated really hard then shuts back off after 10 to 15 seconds, smell gasoline really strong

Sounds like you had a fuel line break. Turn the car on until it stops. Try to follow the smell. Back or underneath or front. Look for pools of fuel. Inspect the top of the engine, fuel lines, rails and injectors.

2007 Ford Taurus sel check engine light came on had it diagnosed having something to do with fuel system. sometime the vehicle will just shut off. has anyone had this problem?

After doing some research on this subject and that trouble code, signs point to the fuel pressure regulator. I believe this is located inside the fuel tank on the taurus. I believe you have a "returnless" fuel system. Meaning there is only one line coming from the tank with no return line. The pressure regulator in the tank can fail causing fuel pressures to go sky high. That will cause fueling issues which can stall the car or cause it to run badly.

Based on the information you provided, I think this is the best place to start. Good luck.

My 2000 Ford Taurus doesn't seem to be getting fuel. It stutters at stops and today, I couldn't get the car to accelerate. I couldn't get it over 30, then it slowly started to regain speed.

Stop in to one of the major parts stores like Pep Boys, & Autozone, for free trouble code scan & see what you get & get back to us with codes if any. Makes it easier & cheaper in long run.
