2003 Toyota Highlander V6 Cruise Control problem

2003 Toyota Highlander V6 Cruise control about 10 minutes after setting speed control will deactivate yet cruise control light still on ......... or when speed is set sometimes will control will deactivate after transitioning from concrete surface to asphalt or from smooth surface to rough surface.
When the deactivation occurs unable to reset it for over a minute.
Have over 110,000 miles driven. Is there a cruise control module?

Check to make sure you don't have a vacuum leak to the cruise system. sounds like it is loosing vacuum and taking a while to build up.

2007 Ford five hundred cruise control turns off when you hit a bump


First off the cruise control is computer controlled , need to check for diagnostic trouble code's . Your vehicle has electronic throttle control also . If your don't have a factory or professional grade scan tool your odds of being able to fix this yourself is close to zero ! You could find a wiring diagram an do some voltage drop testing ,mite find lose connection .
Speed Control
The speed control system consists of the following components:
  • Speed control switches
  • Speed control deactivator switch
  • Speed control indicator
  • Powertrain control module (PCM)
  • Electronically controlled throttle body
  • Clockspring
The speed control system is controlled by the PCM. The speed control system is designed to maintain a selected vehicle speed between 48 and 200 km/h (30 and 124 mph). The speed control system is controlled by the steering wheel mounted switches (ON, OFF, SET+, SET-, CANCEL, and RESUME), and the brake pedal. The steering wheel mounted switches are hardwired to the PCM.
The speed control functions include:
  • Turning the speed control system on.
  • Setting and maintaining the desired vehicle speed.
  • Accelerating the vehicle speed.
  • Decelerating the vehicle speed.
  • Resuming the prior vehicle speed.
  • Turning the vehicle speed control system off.
  • Canceling the speed control.
The clockspring provides the electrical interface between the steering column wiring and the speed control switches in the steering wheel.
The inputs to the PCM are:
  • Output shaft speed (OSS) sensor
  • Speed control switches
  • Stoplamp switch
  • Speed control deactivator switch
  • SJB messages
The outputs of the PCM for the speed control system are:
  • Speed control indicator lamp
  • Throttle command
The throttle position is completely controlled by the PCM through the electronically controlled throttle body. Speed control electronics are contained entirely within the PCM.
When the speed control system is active, the PCM corrects for deviations in the actual vehicle speed by proportionally moving the throttle plate. The PCM modulates the throttle to minimize error between actual vehicle speed and the desired speed.
The PCM strategy uses the throttle control for smooth accelerations.
The PCM sends a serial message over the controller area network (CAN) to the instrument cluster whenever the speed control telltale should be turned on or off.
In the event of an OFF command or a deactivation request from the deactivator switch, the speed control system carries out a hard deactivation and immediately returns the throttle to the idle position.
In the event of a CANCEL command input, the system deactivates and the throttle returns to the idle position at a smooth and controlled rate.
The speed control system provides self-diagnostics. The speed control system is disabled anytime an error is detected in the system. No cluster telltale or message center messages are displayed when faults occur. Fault codes are logged by the PCM.
An electronic throttle control (ETC) system fault also causes the speed control system to be disabled. In this case, an ETC system warning indicator or message center message is displayed.
Additionally, the following conditions cause the speed control system to deactivate:
  • Transmission gear selector is put into a position other than D or OD.
  • Parking brake is applied.
  • Speed control set speed is over-ridden with the accelerator pedal for a period longer than 5 minutes.
  • Vehicle speed loss from set speed of greater than 16 km/h (10 mph) occurs.
  • Vehicle speed falls below the minimum allowable limit of 48 km/h (30 mph).
  • Speed control switch is pressed or stuck longer than 2 minutes.

Where is the fuse for cruise control on a 2003 envoy


It is HVAC 1fuse #39 in the rear fuse block ,this powers the on/off switch for cruise control ! Fuse Block - Rear Beneath the left rear seat. What engine does it have ? 4.2 L or 5.3 l There is no vacuum involved in the operation of the cruise control ! Your vehicle has electronic throttle control .
Cruise control is a speed control system that maintains a desired vehicle speed under normal driving conditions at vehicle speeds above 40 km/h (25 mph). Steep grades may cause variations in the selected vehicle speeds.

The cruise control switches are located on the multifunction/turn signal lever.
The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors the signal circuits of the cruise control switches in order to determine when to capture and maintain the selected vehicle speed. The PCM uses the throttle actuator control (TAC) module motor in order to control the vehicle speed. For further information on the TAC System, refer to Throttle Actuator Control (TAC) System Description in Engine Controls - 4.2 L.
Ignition positive voltage is supplied from the 10 ampere HVAC 1 fuse to the cruise control switch via the ignition 3 voltage circuit. When the normally open cruise control On/Off switch is turned On, the switch closes and the PCM detects a high signal voltage on the cruise control on switch signal circuit. When the normally open Set/Coast switch is pressed, the switch closes and the PCM detects a high signal voltage on the cruise control set/coast switch signal circuit. To engage the cruise control system, turn the On/Off switch On and momentarily press the Set/Coast switch. The PCM will confirm that the cruise control enable criteria has been achieved. The PCM will engage the cruise control system and record the selected vehicle speed. The PCM sends a class 2 message to the instrument panel cluster in order to illuminate the cruise control indicator. Pressing the accelerator pedal, while the cruise control system is engaged, will allow the driver to override the cruise control system in order to accelerate the vehicle beyond the current set vehicle speed. When the accelerator pedal is released, the vehicle will decelerate and resume the current set vehicle speed. The driver can also override the current set vehicle speed via the Set/Coast switch and the Resume/Accel switch. When the cruise control system is engaged, pressing and holding the Set/Coast switch will allow the vehicle to decelerate from the current set vehicle speed without deactivating the cruise control system. When the Set/Coast switch is released, the PCM will record the vehicle speed and maintain the vehicle speed as the new set vehicle speed. When the cruise control system is engaged, momentarily pressing the Set/Coast switch will allow the vehicle to decelerate at 1.6 km/h (1 mph) increments for each time that the Set/Coast is momentarily pressed, with a minimum vehicle speed of 37 km/h (23 mph). When the normally open Resume/Accel switch is activated, the switch closes and the PCM detects a high signal voltage on the cruise control resume/accel switch signal circuit. Activating and holding the Resume/Accel switch, when the cruise control system is engaged, will allow the vehicle to accelerate to a greater vehicle speed than the current set vehicle speed. When the Resume/Accel switch is released, the PCM will record the vehicle speed and maintain the vehicle speed as the new set vehicle speed. When the cruise control system is engaged, momentarily activating the Resume/Accel switch will allow the vehicle to accelerate at 1.6 km/h (1 mph) increments for each time that the Resume/Accel switch is momentarily activated, with the maximum acceleration total of 16 km/h (10 mph) over the current set vehicle speed . Momentarily activating the Resume/Accel switch, after the cruise control system has been disengaged by pressing the brake pedal, will recall the previous set vehicle speed that is recorded in the PCM.

has this issue been professionally diagnosed? a failure in the module may not be the issue..... pull codes from cruise computer(this may be achieved by jumper wire at diag connecter near passengers strut tower_ cruise light on dash will flash two digit code combinations). is there an ABSlight on also? speed sensor original?

Ford focus cruise control


Once you have turned your cruise control on accelerate to desired speed press SET button on right hand side of steering wheel before lifting foot from accelerator, then remove foot from accelerator. pushing RESUME button will deactivate cruise control without turning it off. Then when clear of traffic push resume again to activate cruise control. It will automatically resume to previous set speed.

The cruise control doesn't work but the light cruise is on in the panel and the actuator have been change. The fuse is also looking good but i'm wondering if any relay or other switch could be in cause?...


Cruise controls use Vacuum from the inlet manifold to operate the throttle linkage for cruising. If the hose that supplies the vacuum is not tight on the connections at either end, due to getting hard and/or splitting, the unit will not have enough vacuum to operate the linkage. Check the hose that supplies the cruise control, as well as all the hoses used for pollution control in the engine bay for poor connections. They should be tight, not hard or split and not be able to be removed easily.

You need a code reader to read the codes to see if the input vehicle speed sensor may be at fault.

Check the speed control deactivation switch on the master cylinder. disconnect and use a jumper wire to connect the wires together. If the cruise works it's the switch.

Having a scan tool hooked up to check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes should be the first step in the diagnostic procedure .

Principles of Operation
The speed control system is controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM). The speed control system is designed to maintain a selected vehicle speed between 48 and 200 km/h (30 and 124 mph). The speed control system is controlled by the steering wheel mounted switches (ON, OFF, SET+, SET-, and RESUME), the stoplamp switch, clutch pedal speed control deactivator switch (manual transmission), and the speed control deactivator switch. The steering wheel mounted switches are hardwired to the PCM through the clockspring.
The speed control functions include:
  • turning the speed control system on.
  • setting and maintaining the desired vehicle speed.
  • accelerating the vehicle speed.
  • decelerating the vehicle speed.
  • turning the vehicle speed control system off.
  • cancelling the speed control.
Pressing and releasing the ON switch turns the speed control system on. Pressing and releasing the SET+ or SET- switch while the vehicle is traveling at the desired speed activates the speed control system.
Tapping the SET+ or the SET- switch while in the set mode increases or decreases the maintained vehicle speed by 1.6 km/h (1 mph) per tap, respectively. If either button is pressed and held, the vehicle speed continues to accelerate (SET+) or decelerate (SET-) until the button is released.
Pressing and releasing the OFF switch, or switching the ignition switch to the OFF position, turns the speed control system off. Applying the brake pedal puts the speed control system into the standby mode. Pressing the RESUME button when the speed control system is in the standby mode causes the vehicle to accelerate to the last set speed. RESUME does not function if the OFF button is pressed or if the current vehicle speed is below the minimum operational speed.
The clutch pedal speed control deactivator switch is used on vehicles equipped with a manual transmission. When the clutch pedal is applied with the vehicle speed control system engaged, the normally closed switch opens and signals the PCM to deactivate the speed control.
The speed control deactivator switch is provided as an additional safety feature. When the brake pedal is applied, an electrical signal from the stoplamp switch is sent to the smart junction box (SJB), which then sends a message to the PCM to deactivate the speed control system. Under increased brake pedal effort, the speed control deactivator switch opens and removes the voltage signal from the PCM input circuit, deactivating the speed control system.
Whenever the speed control system is engaged and active, a speed control icon on the instrument cluster is illuminated.
The inputs to the PCM are:
  • Output shaft speed (OSS) sensor
  • Transmission range (TR) sensor
  • Speed control switch
  • Clutch pedal speed control deactivator switch
  • Speed control deactivator switch
  • Accelerator pedal position sensor
  • SJB
  • Parking brake

  • Speed control indicator lamp

  • Vehicle clutch pedal is applied
  • Speed control set speed is over-ridden with the accelerator pedal for a period longer than 5 minutes
  • Vehicle speed loss from set speed of greater than 16 km/h (10 mph) occurs
  • Vehicle speed falls below the minimum allowable limit of 48 km/h (30 mph)
  • Parking brake is applied
  • Speed control switch is pressed or stuck for longer than 2 minutes

Inspection and Verification
  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually inspect the following for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

  1. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  1. Verify the speedometer operates correctly without speed control by test driving the vehicle. If the speedometer does not operate correctly, refer to Section 413-01 .
  1. Verify the stoplamps operate correctly with the ignition switch in the ON position. If the stoplamps do not operate correctly, refer to Section 417-01 .
  1. Verify the parking brake warning indicator is operating correctly. If the parking brake warning indicator does not operate correctly, refer to Section 413-01 .
  1. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • check that the program card is correctly installed.
    • check the connections to the vehicle.
    • check the ignition switch position.
  1. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
  1. Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
    • CAN circuits fault; all electronic control units no response/not equipped, refer to Section 418-00 .
    • No response/not equipped for PCM, refer to Section 418-00 .
    • System passed, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs, and carry out the self-test diagnostics for the PCM.
  1. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index.
  1. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, GO to Symptom Chart .
