Run auxiliary power source to compressor and see if clutch coil engages, low preasure indicates low on refrigerant but should be enough to engage compressor.

2003 PT Cruiser: why when I am in Drive and I turn on the A/C the engine shakes?

possibly excessive gas in the ac system is making it hard to turn the ac compressor---possible ac compressor failure---possible that the idle speed falls too low when the ac is switched on because the idle speed is not being compensated for the extra load of the ac compressor.

Ac compressor good but wont start

You must have a leak, the compressor will not run if the system is low on charge, the charge carries the oil to lube the parts of the system. Also do an electrical jumper of the compressor cycling/pressure sensing switch.

I have an 08 PT Cruiser since new ,now 50,000 miles the air conditioning quit. only hot air. I'm at a loss. Don't know where to start checking.any help appreciated. Thanks

While the vehicle is idling with the hood open and the AC set to Maximum cool listen for the AC compressor to kick in. If it is kicking in frequently, you will be able to tell the difference, then you need to recharge the system. This is a periodic requirement and doesn't necessarily indicate a major problem. You can get a can with a gauge to refill the system from any of a number of places. I usually use Arctic Freeze R134a. The directions are on the can and the fitting will only connect to the low side of the system so you don't have to worry about making an error by connecting to the high side by mistake. Add freon till your system is in the proper operating range and the compressor stays operating while the AC is on. Now, if you connect to the system and the reading is too high you have a serious issue and will need to have the whole system serviced by a shop.

sounds to me like you got it overcharged. Get that suction pressure down around 25-30 psi.

Finding out whether there is a lower connection that I can connect the freon hose to

U may have overcharged the system, what is the pressure reading on the low side, the hose will only hook to the low side line, the fittings are different for each line, lo and high side..

My AC went out suddenly and it turns out I got a major leak in one of the tubes in the AC system and thus warm air. When I bought the first can of refrigerant it didn't take much to get the pressure back where it should be. After some good advise I learned that my compressor was kicking on and off (you'll hear it cycle on and of every few seconds or so) and not STAYING on. Turns out because the system was drained of coolant I had to fill the tank a little at a time and actually go over the recommended pressure to force the air out of the line and get enough coolant in the system to kick the compressor on.
Turns out it was all for not...given the hole in my system it just leaked right out. I live in GA and still don't have it fixed; I was quoted $800 to fix it and figured I could live with it.
