Well the only petcock that comes to mind is the radiator drain petcock. It would be located in the bottom of the radiator plastic tank, at either the right or left end on the engine side. Many times the tabs that you use to turn it with are broken off, making it harder to see where it is. If you are going to do a coolant flush, just disconnect the lower radiator hose to drain the coolant; it is faster!
If this is what you are doing there is a vent screw in the top of the thermostat housing to let out air when filling the system. VERY IMPORTANT TO DO. I hope that this answers your question.
You will need to do two things: drain the radiator then remove the lower radiator hose to drain most of the engine block.
Make sure the engine is cold. DO NOT do this if the engine is hot. Leave the radiator cap in place for now as this will allow the expansion tank to drain as you drain the radiator.
Find the radiator drain petcock and place a bucket or pan underneath. You want to catch as much coolant as possible rather than let it pool on the ground. Anti-freeze is highly toxic to animals and people (like little children) so treat it accordingly. It will also make a slick mess on the ground. Open the petcock and allow the radiator and expansion tank to drain. Once the radiator is empty you can remove the radiator cap. You will need to remove the lower radiator hose. Ideally remove the hose from the engine side if you can. More coolant will come out fairly quickly so make sure you have a pan beneath to try and catch it. You have now drained as much coolant as possible from the engine without having to resort to removing the engine block drain plug(s) (hard to get to and not worth the effort IMHO). At this point you will need to flush the system with fresh water to purge the rest of the old coolant. I am not going to go into the finer points of doing that here; you can look that up online as there is a wealth of "How-To" info on this. It's a good idea to use some radiator flush to help remove rust and other deposits from the cooling system especially if the old coolant is brown in color.
Radiators usually have a valve/petcock located on the engine side of the radiator down at the bottom. Valve turns like a bolt and antifreeze coolant will drain out into your drainpan. Use care as coolant is poison and needs to be disposed of properly. After radiator has drained, retighten petcock and fill to the appropriate level.
I have worked on the marine version of these engines many times, and find the knock sensor is normally located on coolant drain petcock. This is done because the "knock" sound moves efficiently through the coolant in the engine block. It is normally on the passenger side side of the engine, under the exhaust manifold. This may vary depending on engine model.
Find the location where the upper radiator hose connects to
the intake manifold of the engine by tracing it from the radiator to thermostat intake housing bolted to the intake.
Remove the radiator hose from the thermostat intake housing
by loosening the band clamp that secures it into place. With the clamp
loosened, pull the hose off the housing.
Remove the two bolts that secure the housing to the intake manifold and then lift the housing off the intake.
Lift the thermostat out of the intake manifold and place the
new thermostat into the hole. The end of the thermostat with the pin
protruding from it sticks out of the intake manifold.
Lift the thermostat intake housing gasket off the intake manifold and place the new one onto the intake manifold.
Place the thermostat intake housing onto the intake manifold and bolt it into place. Reconnect the hose using the band clamp.
the Dodge onto a set of front-end ramps and secure the parking break.
Allow adequate time for the radiator fluid to cool down. Thirty minutes
is usually adequate.
Loosen the petcock on the lower right hand side of the
radiator and drain all of the radiator fluid into a drain pan. Close the
petcock once drained.
Trace the lower radiator hose to the location where the hose
connects to the engine block. The metal housing the hose connects to is
the lower thermostat outlet. Remove the hose from the outlet by
loosening the band clamp and then by pulling the hose off the outlet. Be
careful--some fluid will drain from the hose.
Remove the two bolts that secure the thermostat outlet to the engine block and pull the thermostat outlet off the block.
Discard the O-ring inside the bottom edge of the thermostat outlet and place a new one into the outlet.
Pull the thermostat out of the engine block and replace it
with a new one. The end with the pin protruding from it sticks out of
the engine block.
Place the thermostat outlet onto the engine block and secure
it into place. Reattach the lower radiator hose with the band clamp.
Open the radiator filler cap located on top of the radiator
and fill the radiator with the fluid previously drained from the system.
Step by Step
1. Find the lower radiator hose and follow it to the thermostat housing which is affixed to the engine block.
2. The thermostat is located just under the A/C Compressor.
3.Remove the clamp holding the hose but not before draining the coolant from the petcock, which is near the base of the radiator.
4. Remove the two bolts that affix the thermostat housing to the engine block, and remove the thermostat.
5. Clean the area leaving no residue of old gasket on both the housing and the block and install new thermostat in the same fashion that you removed it.
6.Fill up with coolant and water
