Question about 1994 Toyota Corolla

1 Answer

94 Toyota 4Runner

This is a 'new' used car and just drove it yesterday but this morning the key would not turn out of the 'lock' position. Everything from the steering wheel to the gear shift is locked in place. I have tried everything I know to do including jiggling the keys and steering wheel back and forth while trying to turn. I'm using the only key I was given that cranked it yesterday and it is in park so I don't know if there's a key lock button somewhere that I'm just not finding? I don't have an owners manuel... Can someone help me out?

Why does my toyota 4runner steering wheel lock while driving

The keyed ignition itself won't stop the lock from engaging. The lock is a spring loaded plunger in the column itself that should be retracted by the keyed ignition. There is wear somewhere in the linkage.

1992 toyota 4runner ignition is locked cannot turn the key

I had the same problem and after reading this thread contacted an automobile lock smith. He stated that the first thing to do is get a new key made to the factory key code. The metal in the key is softer than the metal pins in the lock tumbler, and when you make copies from an old key it copies the wear plus some.
I did not have the key code fob that came with the car so the lock smith told me to take the VIN# to the Toyota dealer and they can cut a key based upon the stored code for my 4Runner.

$10 later it works fine with the new key and a heck of a lot cheaper than spending the $200 to have the ignigition drilled and replaced.

i used to work for toyota and the easiest way to see what is going on is when the starter is not working try to tap the starter with a hammer while holding the key in the start position. if it works then the starter is the problem. if not then you need to check and see how many volts your are getting to both of the starter wires. they should both be battery voltage. if you don"t have good voltage at the starter then you will need to see where you are loosing voltage...

How do you remove and replace the ignition lock cylinder on a 1997 toyota 4runner?

Carefully pull the upper trim panel from the dash.
  • With the key in the existing cylinder, turn it to the accessory position.
  • There is a small button on the bottom of the cylinder housing, Push it in with a small screwdriver, the pull the key and cylinder out.
  • Insert the new key in the new cylinder and slide it into the opening.
It is recommended that you disconnect power to the battery before performing this operation, but I successfully removed and installed a new one without doing so.
