It's not the alternator, it's the display. The solder connections go bad in the display and under vibration they flicker and give false readings, If you are good with soldering you can use a small pencil soldering iron and 're-solder" the circuit board, I did and it helped. Also the ground is poor as is the connection to the dash unit. Carefully clean both, I ran a new ground to the steel support and soldered in the new wire to the factory ground. It helped. Be careful as the tachometer lags a lot,

16.9 v will blow every bulb in the vehicle and damage any sensitive electronics. You alternator is runing wide open.and not charging. Actually its the regulator in the altrnator. It will cook your battery as well. need replace and battert check. - good luck

2003 bmw x5 4.4 battery light stays on

Brother Mark, changing the battery with a new one being done won't make the light go out, as you noticed. Light is still on so you changed the alternator. Good, but the battery light is STILL on. This only means that the charging circuit from the alternator is not working in the voltage regulator or the wiring is not connected properly to the alternator/regulator. A new battery will show over 13 to 13.5 volts not connected. An old battery will still show 12 volts and still be weak or bad. After connected and engine running, the system will show at least 14 volts because alternator/regulator is working properly, using a voltmeter/load tester connected to the battery. If after replacing the battery and alternator it is still reading 12 to 13.5 volts, it is not working and the light will stay lit on the dash. You may have purchased a faulty alternator if the system tests out this way. Have your system checked with a volt meter or load tester bit be sure all the connections are proper and clean.

Car doesn't start

try using a volt meter after you shut it off and watch the meter and see if it drains, which would mean something is still drawing power when the car is off, then try removing fuses one at a time too possibly narrow down where the draw s coming from.if the battery is new then it should not have a bad cell which could cause it too drain.

71 c10 not staying charged... new battery alternator fuses good and new voltage regulator

Maybe it wasn't running long enough to charge up the battery?
Stop trying to jump it, when you are having problems with it dying, take the battery off and have it charged. And/or buy a $20 voltmeter to see what the battery shows. If it says less than 12 volts, it is discharged, and needs charging. A good battery that is not run down should have at least 12.5 volts. A new battery that is charged should have very close to 13 volts, maybe 12.8 volts.
When you have the truck running, check the alternator for charging. You put the voltmeter right on the battery and check it again. This time, with truck running, battery should show at least 13.5 volts. That shows the alternator is working. A good alternator will put out about 13 or 14 volts-the regulator will keep it from going any higher to prevent problems, like a melting battery or electrical parts burning out.
I would say get the charging system working right, then address the problem of dying at stop lights. That could be a carburetor problem, if the alternator is working.

I think I have an alternator problem? The charge needle on the dash guage is spiking to 16 volts off and on. I put a voltmeter to the battery and it is only charged to about 11 volts. With the engine...

Hello
The normal charge of alternator on idling is about 13 to 14 volts. 12 is acceptable but keep in mind it will need attention soon. The needle fluctuates due to the revs of the alternator - there is nothing to worry about. Just look that the charge is always above 12V on idle.

When the Jeep was new the volt meter read 14 volts....now the volt meter reads 13 volts with a one year old battery. Since the battery is a 12 volt battery should there be any concern that the volt meter...

It needs to be looked at,hook a volt meter to the battery, and start the engine, turn the ac on high blower, and the head lights on,the alternator should be putting out 13.65 volts to 14.25 volts,if it is any lower than this, replace the alternator, now,if the reading is not the same as in the vehicles volt meter, then the cables, positive and negative need to be replaced, the cables get old,and corrode on the inside and break down, they do not carry the current as they should.Shuold you decide to replace them,go with a larger diameter cable, both positive, and negative.

Headlights flickering consistant with engine RPM. also, battery light on dash flickers with RPM

Your alternator is worn or the voltage regulator (usually built into most modern alternators) is failing.

Alternator and electrical problems ive changed alternator twice, now clicking noise under dash bat. light comes on and dash lights flicker

check all battey connections and system grounds. Check that the battery has 12v and holds properly when load tested. To check charging system, don't disconnect any battery leads...put a volt meter across the battery. when running, you should have at least 12.9v and volts should not drop. (usual reading is generally at or near 13) at idle with all accessories on voltage should be close to that as well. voltage should not exceed 14.Also make sure that drive belt is not slipping.
