Re: Removal of broken wheel studs on 2004 saturn ion
The studs are pressed in and you need to use a big (mini sledge) hammer to knock them out. It will take a couple of good blows to push them out. To install the new ones, push the stud in from the back as far as it will go. Put some washers over the stud so that about 4 threads are present and lubricate the threads with bearing grease. Put your wheel nut on the stud and start to tighten the nut to the washers. This will pull the stud through so that the splined section will engage the hub assembly. Put more washers on if needed. Hope this helped.

you press the old one out and the new one in, takes a special tool. or you can use a chisel/punch with a BFH and beat the old one out, then draw the new one through with a nut, a thick washer, and a long breaker bar. i would do it the way which stresses metal the least. Call a local shop and ask them how much to just replace the stud while you wait. won't take long
YOU CAN PRESS OUT BROKEN LUG STUD WITH STUD REMOVAL TOOL AND INSTALL A NEW STUD.THE TIRE SHOP WILL FIX IT.WONT COST THAT MUCH.IF YOU DONT HAVE RIGHT TOOL YOU CAN DAMAGE WHEEL BEARING IF YOU HAMMER ON BROKEN STUD.
Hi! You will need to replace the stud for sure. Buy a new one on your local auto supply and remove the old stud. YOu can perform this by taking off the wheels, it can be pull out from the back. Hope this helps and have a good one!
If you only have one, you really can ignore it. To replace it you have to remove the wheel and pound it out. It comes from the back. Since it is broke it will come out easy. Putting the new one in you have to force it a little move it around until you find the area that gives you the most room to work it in. It is best if you can find a big nut to fit over it and tighten the stud using the new nut for the stud and putting the big nut to take up the area of the stud that is not threaded.
I assume that you are referring to the wheel studs and if so you will have to remove the wheel, the brake caliper, the brake caliper stand and the brake rotor. Drive the old stud out with a hammer. Make sure you purchase new lug nuts with the studs. If they are the acorn style, buy one that is not to help with installation. Slide the new stud in the hole from the rear of the flange, install some washers for clearance of the stud shoulder. Install the non acorn style lug nut on the stud backwards. Using a impact gun, pull the stud through. Remove the backwards lug nut and washers.
I'll try to help you. If you are having trouble with 3 out of 5 studs on one wheel you may want to go to an autoparts store or Salvage yard to look at the whole hub. Usually a press is used to remove the bolts so you would be taking off the hub anyway. When you pay for 3 bolts and labor you may be better off in a Salvage yard or parts place for a different hub. The rear hub on front wheel drive cars is like a trailer axle. Much simpler to remove mounting bolts and press in new bolt. But if rear has differential(rear wheel drive) it has an axle shaft. Would be easier to grind and drill out broken stud on car. You can draw new bolt into place by placing bolt through a socket and use the wheel nut to draw the bolt into the hub.
