Question about 2001 Kia Sportage

My 2001 Kia Sportage is overheating. This was a sudden issue. The fan is not turning on and I noticed that the radiator fluid was leaking from a hose below and in between the motor and battery. What could the problem be?

Hi,

Your overheating problem is directly related to the 2 things you mentioned:
- auxilliary fan not turning on
- radiator fluid leaking

re: aux fan; you'll need to have the sensor checked out, this is usually located along the bottom of your radiator. This may require replacement.

re: fluid leak; the bottom hose is the return hose, which puts the water from the radiator back into your engine's water jacket. A leak here means you are losing water every minute, even with the engine stopped. Have the hose checked for proper seating, or replacement.

Your 2 problems may have been caused by an impact or bad scrape with the vehicle's front end, which can damage your radiator, at this point, the whole radiator assembly needs to be replaced. Keep this to yourself until it is coaxed out of you by a qualified mechanic.

Hope this works out for you.

First rectify the leakages! then ensure that the thermo sensor is in good condition! if it is then change your engine control unit after checking that the fan are working!

2001 kia sportage is over heating but has no leaks. the radiator has been flushed but is very rusty inside. The water is rusty inside the radiator. We have checked the resevoir, it is fine. the water...

Rusty is from running a bad or no mix of coolant. (PH level is off) You may have a water pump that has corroded impellers, and can't move the coolant as well any more. I would start by making sure to flush the engine block again, and make sure you flush water through every possible hose, and where you can get at it.

Over heating 1997 Kia Sportage

Does the radiator fan operate properly? The radiator fluid level (checked when the engine is cold) must be 'at the cap' with the reserve tank about half-full. Blow out the radiator core with compressed air (from the engine side) to clean it of bugs and other debris. Does the anti-freeze look green or rust brown? If rust colored, the entire cooling system needs to be drained, cleaned with system cleaner, and refilled again with a 50/50 fresh mixture of anti-freeze and water. If combustion gases are leaking into the cooling system through a bad gasket or warped cylinder head, that will cause overheating. Check the radiator cap for condition of it's seal. Occasionally, the water pump impeller will begin slipping on it's drive shaft causing limited water flow through the system. That is checked by reducing the level of fluid in the radiator to just above the core and temporarily removing the thermostat. You will observe water moving rapidly if the pump is working.

Have the radiator mounted fan checked.

It may not be turning on when you use the A/C.

2001 Kia Sportage overheats when sitting still, but not all the time, and when the A/C is turned on

If it's cooling properly while in motion, then it's most likely the fans aren't kicking in. Check fuses for the fans and also the temp switch that controls the fans.
Also, in a pinch situation, if out on the road and it starts overheating, roll down the windows, and turn the heater on full blast with the fan blowing...it''ll be uncomfortable, but your heater core can act as an emergency radiator...

2001 Kia Sportage fuse 4 radiator fan?

Radiator fan fuse is fuse # 5 (40 amp/Green) located behind the interior fuse access panel on the left side of the instrument panel next to the steering column. Also, in the underhood Power distribution center, next to the air cleaner filter are two black fan relays: high speed (F) at the far left, second row down and a low speed, 1st one to the right on the bottom row.
