Question about 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

1 Answer

All dash gauge related

Its only happened three times in the last 2 months, but the "emergency brake" light and the light thing on the left light up after I'm already driving down the road. No squealing brakes or anything like that. Also, the gas gauge will sometimes drop like I have nothing in there and the gas light will come on....this happens when I have full tank or anything and has happened several times.

CHECK YOUR BRAKE FLUID LEVEL, IF ITS LOW THE LIGHT CAN GO ON AND OFF OVER BUMPS. YOU MAY ALSO NEED BRAKES. THE FLUID IS IN THE CALIPERS.

THE FUEL GAGE PROBLEM IS MOST LIKELY THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR.

Check your bulbs first, I have lost both headlights on my ford at once on account of the bulbs burning out at the same time. Same thing probably happen, you have one filament out. The lights can work, but if the filament for brake is burnt, you don't see brake lights.

Intermittent Gauge Failure

I doubt it, but anything's possible.
The only thing connecting the two things would be the parking lights and dash lights, not the gauges.
Sounds like a problem with the body controller, or the wiring harness behind the dash. Advance warning - there are miles of wiring in a Jaguar. And the problem will have to be occuring for the garage to find it.
Do you think it only happens on trips, and not just local driving ?
Could be something heating up if you need 50+ miles to make it happen.

I have a four part problem that started by some one wiring my trailer pig tale wrong it was the only thing done minutes before the first problem started #1 gear stick wont come out of park un less you...

It is all related and the connections should be undone immediately. I am worried about you having an electric signal going into your gas tank which the fuel gauge gets its readings from. The signals are suppose to work on grounding and low resistence, not strong voltage.

Your Ignition switch needs a signal from a switch on the brake pedal lever which tells the truck that your foot is on the brake. There is also a switch under the dash which can be bumped or broken by hitting it with your feet. The loss of signal is suppose to keep the Vehicle in Park.

Emergency flashers work through the MFS multifunction switch on the turnshift handle. Separate flashers create the pulse to flash the lights. Improper wiring could burn out the flasher units.

On Later Ford products, the plastic cover on the Light hookup had the wiring terminals all identified. If you used an aftermarket kit, the color codes should have been assembled to match the factory colors. There is no guarantee the aftermarket units did do that.

Sometimes working on wiring is difficult if the mechanic is colorblind. Some of the better kits will have a wire connector to install in a plug under the dash between the brake pedal and ashtray. Then this harness runs as 1 piece all the way to the rear bumper. The short wire kits tap into the rear light sockets.

Some of the Electronic light flashers can sense how many bulbs are in the circuit to maintain a steady flashing rate with or without a trailer hooked up. Thats about as much as I can help you with.

My car has 2 problems. I don't know if they are related. First I had "service engine " light on, test said "misfire cylinder 3" all spark plugs were change back on July 2010, 2 weeks...

You need to go to a differant mechanic sounds like he has no idea what he is doing. You should never have to change spark plugs three times in 6 months. But the brake problem is not related to the SEL light and I dont think the installed your brakes properly if the are worn out that fast also.

My dashboard and gauges keep flickering on and off

sound like you have a lose connection it could be the cables on to the dash or the socket it fits to. you would need to remove the dash and clean the connection and re fit it. if you push on the dash does it stop. ? just check this first as some times its just a tiny amount of play in the connections that's the problem .

Same thing happened to me on my 2000 silverado July 3, 2009.
There is a release next to the parking brake pedal. You have to reach way under the dash but it has worked for me for the last month. I have the part to fix it but haven't had the time.
