Question about 2002 Audi A4

I have misfires in cylinders 1,2 and 4 on my 1999 audi a4 1.8t, it idles fine and easy accel is fine but once i try for heavy acceleration it spits and sputters

    the car revs up fine when in park or neutral do you still think this is fuel problem??

Have fuel injector clean + change fuel filter.also change plugs and wires every 30000 miles .if it been a while change them.

    dirty injectors can cause cylinder misfires.bad coils also.

    its rare all three coils are bad.the same time.what i would do buy one good coil place in coil 1 2 4 spot and do one coil at a time to see if new coil fires in that spot.make sure you are using the right spark plugs it should be NGK BKUR6ET.SPARK PLUG GAP SHOULD BE 0.032.if all is good .injectors 1 2 4 .is dirty or almost stop up.or you have a in take leak.

Spit and sputter


you are not supposed to adjust the idle, ever. that is the ECUs job.
adjusting it , now, means you have lied to the ECU.
it wont ever be right again. leave that screw alone, its a factory set
adjustement.


nice guess though, very carb like guess. Is common idea... sure...
its EFI. and has Idle speed controls.
if the engine misfires, (yours is) the RPM drops, the ECU tries to
raise idle 2 ways, by opening the ISC and advancing timing.(spark)

this can fail easy , if any EFI engine misfires.
what happens is the ISC has lost control..
lets use 1 example , 1 cylinder is dead, the ISC can NOT fix that. nor idle right.
the solution is to leave the idle alone.
and.
then fix misfire, than last fix the ISC functions.,

but i get ahead of myself......

Did you do the 60,000 mile full tune up as listed in the oper guide?
no? well misfire is going to happen. (new spark parts and filters)

tune it up. if still misfire. we diagnose that 2nd, and fix it.

there are tests for each step. I can show you them, all of them.

there are over 50 causes of misfire.

now that guy is very pesky , even stalling engine

Misses when I accelerate , idles just fine


apply brake and accelerate engine while vehicle is standing still, you need to apply brake hard, DO NOT do this for a period of more than 1 minute or you will be putting alot of stress on your transmission. you will be trying to set off the "check engine" warning lamp or the "service engine soon" warning lamp, and get a misfire failure code, after code sets on your vehicle computer, get it scanned it will tell you which engine cylinder is misfiring ie "P0301= cylinder #1 misfire" then check out spark plug, spark plug wire and ignition coil. one of them is probably causing this.

sounds like you are suffering from low fuel pressure, with a proper gauge you can check to be certian that you have addaquit pressure. at idle you should have 14-18 psi.

I have 2002 audit quattro TT with 180k miles. When I do a normal acceleration the car surges and rpm drop but pick back up. If I accel hard it runs fine. Also at idle at times it varies 200 rpm like a


this sounds similar to a problem i had. as the rpm went over 2000 the engine would stop for a split second and then kick back in.
after a few days looking my garage finally found the problem was a faulty air mass meter.
this cost me £200 in total to be repaired.

tried testing the igniter also i would look into the injector, that will cause a single cylinder misfire and probably is your problem?misfires are not noticeable at higher speeds, which im sure you know but i would go that route, could have a pinched injector or a stuck one. one easy way to test is swap 3rd injector with another and see if that one starts misfiring instead, another rought is to get a cheap auto stethoscope and put it to each injector to hear if its opening and closing, compare with others. good luck.
