SOURCE: 1999 mercury sable

the rust issue is related to the design of the cooling system, in a word ford screwed up, air gets trapped in the system and causes it to rust, the heater core is most likely plugged with rust, pull the hoses off at the firewall to the core and back flush the heater core, this should ge the rust out, then have the cooling system flushed with a power flusher, this will be a shop repair but there is no way around it, u may want to contact Ford/Mercury about a possible recall on the cooling system for this rust issue, as far as the A/C goes it is not related, does the compressor engage? let me know.

2003 mercury sable blows cool air when heater is turned on.

Most likely it is a clogged heater core. Have your heater core reverse flushed or your blend door is stuck open.

99 sable 3.0ll Heater omly blows cold air.. radiator and heater core and thermostat replaced.,system flushed.

Here are a couple of things I would try.

Make sure your coolant level is at the full mark in the reservior, ( plastic tank)

Start your engine and let it run 6 to 8 minutes, so it reaches it's operating temperature.
With the engine still running, turn your heater on full blast. You should hear a light clicking noise from the thermostat opening up to cycle the coolant from the radiator. ( sometimes if a sealant is used, and it shouldn't be in most cases, when installing a thermostat excess sealant can prevent the thermostat from operating properly )
If you hear the click from the thermostat then you know that's working. then.......;

Turn the engine off, look back behind the engine at the firewall you should see 2 small hoses, about 1 inch in diameter. While the engine is still hot, carefully reach back and feel both hoses, both should be hot. If only 1 is hot then the coolant isn't circulation through the heater core and you could have blockage in your system.

Another good possibility is, the trap door that moves between the heater core duct, and the a/c evaporator duct is not moving back and forth like it should. To check this you will need to remove a few parts from the lower dash to gain access to inspect.

I hope this helps you.

PUT KNEW THERMASTAT IN STILL BLOWING COLD AIR THE EXPERT TOLD ME

Most auto supply stores sell a radiator flush kit. You install an adapter in the heater hose and hook up a garden hose to the adapter. You must start your car and run the heater in the max hot position to flush the heater core.

The blend door that regulates the airflow over the heater core may be stuck in the AC position. It is inside the case and is most difficult to get to. There may be a YouTube video that may help you locate it and test it.

No heat

if engine temp is normal after running awhile. i would try to flush the heater core.(disconnecting the heater hoses from engine and flushing separately) ford cars and trucks have a "brown coolant" problem and the coolant will eventually clog heater core.
