HI. this is a jammed ignition mechanism. there is a safety clip inside the key slot that should ,(once the key is inserted), raise this clip to allow the full motion of the ignition cylinder mech. this mechanism is jammed for some reason.

Normally, when this happens, you can use a paper clip(straighten), to release the clip inside the cylinder if it is not a severe jam up. straighten out a paper clip and, slide it inside the ignition key hole. move it up and down. if the jam is not to bad, it should release the spring clip. if the ignition continues to not allow full motion, the jam may be severe. in this case, you will need to replace the entire ignition switch.

I will need the year model of the vehicle if possible. this will help with the ignition replacement procedure.

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the terminal on the battery. Remove the upper and lower steering column covers by unscrewing or un clipping them.

    2. Remove the
wheel by lifting off the center cover, disconnecting the horn wire and
removing the retaining nut and washer. Make a mark on the steering
wheel spline and the wheel itself so you can line it back up precisely.
Pull the steering wheel straight back to remove from the shaft.

    3. Take
off windshield wiper and turn signal switches by pulling them off as
you did the steering wheel and disconnect the wiring. Slide the spacer
sleeve off of the steering column.

    4. Unscrew
the ignition switch mounting screws. Pull out the ignition switch.
Disconnect the wiring connector from back of the ignition switch.
Simply loosen the tabs and pull it out.

    5. Insert
your key into the ignition. turn the ignition switch to the locked
position. Depress the retaining pin with a small screwdriver and turn
the key to the Off position to free the cylinder. Once it is free, turn
the key to lock position and remove the key and key cylinder.

    6. Install
your old key cylinder into the new ignition switch assembly. Make sure
the contacts in the cylinder and assembly line up. Reattach wiring to
ignition switch, slide it into place, screw in mounting screws and
      reassemble steering wheel and switches.

These steps may vary slightly or additional removal of some equipment
such as a tilt steering column lever may be required based on the make
and model of your vehicle. Consult with your dealer or manual for
    details.

Hard start, key won't come out of ignition

Did you try to jiggle the key and the steering wheel at the same time? Jiggle the key and turn the steering wheel side to side and it should release.

My 06 magnum sxt won't shift out of park, tried the release in the console. still no good, now I can't remove the key had to disconnect the battery,.

If its anything like my old VW car it may be the stearing lock thats preventing the car key from turning. Pull the stearing wheel one way as hard as you can then the other way then jiggle it while trying to get the key out of the ignition. Nothing to worry about, the lock in there just gets stuck sometimes.

Ignition

apparently steering colum lock. next time try turning your steering wheel to the left while turning the key in the ignition. don't stress the ignition. though if it isn't your stearing lock the last thing you want to do is bust up the or in come cases break your key off in there. Try turning the stearing wheel though. 99% of the time thats what it is.
