Hate to the bearer of bad news, but it sounds like one of the gears in the transmission is shot (namely the ring and pinion gear.) One thing to check and see is to look under the hood and look at where the CV joints enter the transmission. Have someone put it into gear while you look. See if the output shafts of the transmission is turning, but the inner CV joint is not.

Much as I hate to say it, you picked a bad car for a beginning driver. Parts are expensive for this car, and sometimes hard to come by.

2006 chev v8 auto tranmission want go into gear makeing a rowing noice when you crank it

start from furthest u joint on driveshaft (at differential) and work your way up to tranny. check u joints very carefully and thoroughly. if drive line checks out tranny or torque converter is bad. specially when rough grinding noises are heard when put into gear. cranking as you said i refer to starting engine. i assumed you meant when selecting gear with motor on. if there is a noise when you crank engine to start it, then check starter and flexplate (cracked).

Leaks gearoil bad cv joints whats the problem transmission 0r other

Is it a standard tranny or auto? The CV joints usually make an awful racket before they go, the bearings and seals go out, and it will leak oil, But I don't think it would be gear oil in an automatic, I might be wrong, been a while since I messed with CV joints, don't have any cars with front drive anymore. The auto tranny fluid is red, and thin, gear oil is black and thick, like maple syrup. In case you didn't know, The CV joints are an easy fix for most shops, they used to do it for about $150, I have no idea what they charge now. Check it out. Hope this helps.

CV Joint Axle Replacement - How to Repair or Replace

Over time the rubber boots of the CV joints can become cracked, torn, or otherwise compromised. Once moisture and dirt get into a CV joint and grease makes its way out, the CV joints days are numbered. Signs of impending failures are a click-click-clicking or metallic crackling noise while turning and accelerating or a clunking upon deceleration. While one can repack, reboot, and rebuild CV axles, it makes more sense for the average do-it-yourselfer to procure replacement units and swap out the old axles. If a boot is torn or missing, it is possible to save the joint if caught early enough, but usually the damage has already been done. Replacing or servicing the entire CV joint axle assembly may be the smarter move since replacing a boot may involve removing an axle, which may also involve removing half or all of the vehicle's brakes and suspension.
