Hate to the bearer of bad news, but it sounds like one of the gears in the transmission is shot (namely the ring and pinion gear.) One thing to check and see is to look under the hood and look at where the CV joints enter the transmission. Have someone put it into gear while you look. See if the output shafts of the transmission is turning, but the inner CV joint is not.

Much as I hate to say it, you picked a bad car for a beginning driver. Parts are expensive for this car, and sometimes hard to come by.

Hello! I bought a 2002 Audi A6 quattro and recently when i was driving it i heard what seemed like a train/rough/grinding noise coming from the front end. Mostly from the drivers side. Im not sure what the...

Jack up the wheel and see if there is any side ways movement top and bottom. If so it will be wheel bearings. If not turn the wheel and feel for any roughness in the wheel turning. Turn the wheel in and out while spinning the wheel and see if there is anything wrong in noise and feel. If so it most probably be the cv joint. Drive slowly on full lock and listen for a clicking noise as this indicates a failing cv joint as well. You can get aftermarket wheel bearings as the bearing shop will probably have a listing for the bearings in the wheels and they will most likely be about 1/2 ice to genuine items even though they are the same bearing with out the audi name on the box.;

Leaks gearoil bad cv joints whats the problem transmission 0r other

Is it a standard tranny or auto? The CV joints usually make an awful racket before they go, the bearings and seals go out, and it will leak oil, But I don't think it would be gear oil in an automatic, I might be wrong, been a while since I messed with CV joints, don't have any cars with front drive anymore. The auto tranny fluid is red, and thin, gear oil is black and thick, like maple syrup. In case you didn't know, The CV joints are an easy fix for most shops, they used to do it for about $150, I have no idea what they charge now. Check it out. Hope this helps.

sounds like you may have a CV joint ready for replacement. Does it seem to get louder and/or click when you are turning?

CV Joint Axle Replacement - How to Repair or Replace

Over time the rubber boots of the CV joints can become cracked, torn, or otherwise compromised. Once moisture and dirt get into a CV joint and grease makes its way out, the CV joints days are numbered. Signs of impending failures are a click-click-clicking or metallic crackling noise while turning and accelerating or a clunking upon deceleration. While one can repack, reboot, and rebuild CV axles, it makes more sense for the average do-it-yourselfer to procure replacement units and swap out the old axles. If a boot is torn or missing, it is possible to save the joint if caught early enough, but usually the damage has already been done. Replacing or servicing the entire CV joint axle assembly may be the smarter move since replacing a boot may involve removing an axle, which may also involve removing half or all of the vehicle's brakes and suspension.
