Belt Routing on 1992 Grand Marquis

My diagram is short one idler pulley. I have an idler pulley right above the tensioner pulley. The diagram on the car matches the diagram on the new belt package, but neither one match the car. (1992 Grand Marquis 4.6L with the long belt)

No tensioner to put tension on serpentine belt

I would check the routing of the belt as you may have it over a pulley instead of under it . If you are correct then one of the idler pulleys will be adjustable to tension the belt. there are 13 diagrams for the belt but in all the tensioner is the idler pulley next to the crank pulley and in a clockwise rotation has the belt going over the top of it

How do I replace the Airconditioning/power steering belt on a Grand marquis, Mercury(1992)? please show me in a diagram or print somehow

Move the Grand Marquis's serpentine belt tensioner off the serpentine belt with the serpentine belt tool. Pull the belt of the remaining pulleys by hand. Take the belt out of the engine well. Wrap the new belt around the bottom portion of the crankshaft pulley. Follow the belt routing diagram to route the belt over each remaining pulley until only the tensioner remains. Move the Grand Marquis's serpentine belt tensioner aside once more and slip the belt onto the tensioner pulley.Hold the belt in place with one hand while you move the tensioner slowly back into position with the other. I need a belt diagram for a Mercury Grand Marquis 4.6L V8 engine 2006

SECTION 303-05: Accessory Drive 2006 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis Workshop Manual DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Procedure revision date: 03/18/2008 Accessory Drive adobe.gif Printable View (104 KB) The accessory drive system:
  • has a single serpentine accessory drive belt with 6 ribs.
  • has an idler pulley.
  • has an automatic drive belt tensioner.
  • is not adjustable.
The accessory drive system provides power to operate components which power other systems. These could include components such as the generator, power steering pump and A/C compressor. Each of these components is equipped with a pulley which is driven by the accessory drive belt. The accessory drive belt is driven by the engine crankshaft pulley. One or more idler pulleys may be provided to facilitate belt routing and alignment. The automatic belt tensioner maintains correct belt tension and compensates for component wear and changes in system load. System load changes can be caused by the A/C compressor clutch engaging or disengaging, or demand changes on other systems powered by the accessory drive belt. To maintain correct operation of this system, it is critical that the correct length drive belt be installed. The pulleys must also be correctly aligned and kept clean.

Automatic tensioners are calibrated to provide the correct amount of tension to the belt for a given accessory drive system. Unless a spring or damping band within the tensioner assembly breaks, or some other mechanical part of the tensioner fails, there is no need to check the tensioner for correct tension.

Replace serpentine belt

Removal & Installation

  1. Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the drive belt.
WARNING Never suddenly let go of the tensioned idler pulley. The force of the spring pressure suddenly released may damage the idler pulley mechanism. Always release the spring pressure gradually.

To install:
  1. Route the belt over the pulleys making sure all the grooves in the pulleys and the belt line up correctly. Refer to the accessory belt routing section of this manual.
  2. Rotate belt tensioner clockwise and slip drive belt over idler pulley on tensioner.

If for any reason, the tensioner is crooked, replace it!!! Also, install the belt with the writing facing you like you are trying to read a book. This WILL (a trick I learned at Mercedes) prevent even a new belt from squeeling!!

How to bypass the ac with a shoter belt

There is a easy way to re-route the belt after the A/C is removed on any 4.6L Due to the idler and tensioner. When the a/c is not running the pulley spins freely anyway. On 99 and older panthers you can get a shorter belt to bypass the power steering for a little extra power, but need install A/C COMPRESSOR BYPASS PULLEY, or you could buy a a/c compressor delete kit comes with a bracket and idler pulley, that would make things easier, you can use a stock belt with that kit.

Check this for 99' and older belt routing...

zjlimited_249.jpg

Also, check this diagram (click over pic for zoom)...

zjlimited_250.jpg

The tensioner would still work, just not very well. So you would need to by a tight belt to compensate. As far as measuring the new belt size, you will need to use a tape measure, or some string and then measure the length. The best option is an a/c delete 'kit'

Green line represents a revised belt routing in order to *bypass* the A/C compressor. With this method, the tensioner WILL work but VERY limited - you must purchase a tight belt.

Note this is only applicable for the '93-'99 belt routing

Hope helps (remember to rate and comment this answer).

Trying to find out what the pulley diagram is i need to replace a idler or tesion wheel I just do not know the exact name it is the one that is on the passenger side of the engine

Below is a diagram for 3.5L engines. The tension pulley should be the middle left pulley. There should be a tension screw just above it. Loosen the tensioner pulley, route the new belt according to the diagram and while applying pressure to the pulley, tighten it until it's secure.

How do you change an idler pulley on a 97 mercury grand marquis

Using either a serpentine belt tool or a long ratchet and a socket on the tensioner pulley bolt, turn the tensioner to relieve tension and pop the belt off. Remove the idler pulley bolt and replace the idler pulley. To finish it up simply reinstall the belt.

POWER STEERING PULLEY LOSE. BELT CAME OFF. HOW DO I TIGHTEN THE PULLEY?

To the best of my knowledge, there is only a serpentine belt on that model truck, which means that not only is your power steering not working, but your water pump isn't either. DON'T drive this until it's fixed. My guess is that an idler pulley, or a tensioner is junk. The tensioner is the one that you put a wrench on to get the belt back on, there should be a diagram of that right above the radiator. If that tensioner no longer has tension when you try to put the belt back on, then you need a new one. Sometimes, but rarely an idler pulley will go, which is just a pulley bolted to the block
