Most likely the lock cylinder has been removed or broken sometime in the past. If the key came out with the cylinder on it it will probably fit back in and run OK. The lock cylinder is available from the dealer with new keys and should slip in to the column without much trouble. This could vary with the make and model of the van. If the key itself broke off just replace the key.

You can either put that back in make sure the push pin on bottom is sticking out and make sure you can push it in and out. or buy a new on you will slide either one in in the on position snap in place then turn key to off and pull key out.

I am trying to get my 1985 GMC Vandura 2500 to start, but the steering g wheel is locked and the key won't turn to try and turn it over. What would be a cause of this?

If you vehicle is parked on a slant and the wheels are slightly turned, the pressure from the weight of the car may be forcing you steering wheel to bind. Try tweaking the steering wheel in the same direction that the wheels are turned using your left hand and at the same time try turning the key with your right hand. Tweaking the steering wheel takes the pressure off of the ignition switch. If that doesn't work, try a different key if you have one.

Went to start van this morning and it wouldnt even try to start. have power to starter, its good, jumped it out, only thing i can think of is ignition assembly. i turn key and nothing happens.

not so fast. need to check if you are making connection from ignition switch to trans range switch (only lets it start in Park or Nuetral) to starter relay and then to starter,

Went out to start van and it seem as if it wont turn over the first time but it did; then went to the store around the corner and it wont start or turn over. i kept turning the ignition to start and after...

That sounds like a starter issue. If the engine is clicking when you turn the key on it will be starter. If there is nothing when your turning key on it's probably battery or solenoid issue. Solenoid for starter is located attached to the side of your starter.

Toyota power van wont start after replacing fuel pump

did it start befor you replaced the fuel pump, there should be a fuse for pump in the fuse box, It may have went into default mode, is the pump working when you turn on ignition, open fuel line up front, put hose in can, have someone turn on ignition switch, fuel should flow, if it does, your problem lays elsewhere,

Ignition will not turn off the van, key out of van, van still on

it sounds like the small arm inside the steering colunm has broken. on my windstar it was actually two pieces. if you do not have tilt steering the job to replace it isn't too bad tho you have to pull the steering wheel and remove the lock cylinder. to test if this is correct you would need to pull the ignition switch... it's under the steering column. there is a pin on it that fits into the arms that come down from the ignition switch. remove the ignition switch and turn the key while looking up into the hole where the small arm is. if it doesn't move it is broken.

for the immediate problem just either pull the fuse for ignition or remove the breather snorkel that attaches to the throttle body and block it off with your hand.

I have a 98 dodge caravan and when i put the key

You may have to get a new key cut if the tumblers in the ignition lock are not being lined up to unlock the ignition. If the key's was bent in the ignition lock, the ignition lock may be bad and need to be replaced with a new ignition key. Try replacing the ignition key's first, but if you have a spare key. Try that first and if the spare key's don't turn the ignition lock, then you may have to replace the ignition lock. Good luck and keep me posted. oh and try moving the steering wheel left to right as you try to turn the ignition lock.

2000 plymouth voyager problem with ignition switch?

Your problem is caused by the little pins that the key moves to unlock the cylinder, they are sticking, go to a parts store and buy some graphite lock lubricant, if that does not help you will have to replace the lock cylinder before it jams and strands you somewhere.
