Once you have the wheels off the van, there may be a star lock washer holding the drums to the wheel hub on one of the wheel studs. If there is just remove it and throw it away, You may need to remove the adjuster panel at the back of the brake drum housing and loosen up the brake pads, but try to hammer off the drum with a 5 pound hammer. Wear ear protection and glasses, don't want to lose an eye. The drums should fall free from the hub. Good luck and hope this helps, keep me posted, be glad to help.

You remove the tire/wheel assembly and pull it off. Make sure you have removed the factory installed wheel lock tabs on your studs if they are still there.Discard them because they're not needed.

SOURCE: Brake drum loose but wont come off

As long as you have released the handbrake fully, made shure all locking pins are removed and thers no taperd hub bolt in the centre holing drum on , try clamping rear brake hose, slacken of bleed nipple to cylinder this will cause cylinder to relax hopfully allowing room for drum to be pulled off. Only as a final resort you can cold chisil the backplate housing pins to the brake shoes, this will allow shoes and drum to be pulled away but remember new pins will need to be replaced with shoes. If you have any douts about repair take it to a garage

How to get drum pads off a 2000 dodge caravan

The pad drums of your 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan can wear with use. Heat buildup in the brakes can glaze, warp or crack the drum. If that happens, replacement of the drum is the only way to fix it. In most cases, you can remove the rear drums, replace them with a new set and leave the existing shoes on the van. Take a minute and inspect the brake shoes thoroughly while you have the drums off the van.

  1. Loosen the lug nuts on the rear of your 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan with a lug wrench. Do not take them off the wheel studs.
  2. Raise the rear of the van with a jack and support it on a set of jack stands. Place the stands under the rear suspension, making sure they are secure. Remove the lug nuts from the wheel studs and pull off the rear wheels.
  3. Check the rear drum where the wheel studs come through for retaining clips. These are used during the manufacturing process; and if they are still on your van, they need to be removed. Pry the clip off the wheel stud with a flat head screwdriver and discard them. Most vehicles will have two clips on each brake drum.
  4. Grasp the brake drum on the outer edges and pull it straight off the wheel studs and brake pads. Discard the old drum and slide the new drum into place, aligning the holes in the drum with the wheel studs. Push the drum in until it seats completely. Repeat the process on the opposite side of the van.
  5. Position the wheel back on the wheel studs and install the lug nuts by hand. Raise the back of the van with a jack and remove the jack stands from under the suspension. Lower the van to the ground and tighten the lug nuts with a lug wrench.

My 1996 dodge caravan emergency brake is on and the cable broke ! howcan i get the brake off ?

You'll need to remove both rear wheels. On the inside behind the drums/or/ on the rotors , you'll see the cable coming in from the backing plate. Remove the cables for each wheel and pry back the brake shoes. Eventually though, you'll have to replace and adjust the cables in order to pass your states inpection levels. Thank you, Dana

Can't get rear drum off 1996 Dodge Caravan

First make sure the handbrakes are off.
When you jack up the wheel, block the other wheels.
Turn the wheel to be sure the brakes shoes are not pressed against the drum. Else release the brakes.
Take the wheel off. Sometimes the drum can rust and freeze to the hub. The only way to remove it is to keep pound it on the edge of the face really hard. Large hammer is good. Sledge hammer is better. If you could hit it on the back that's good too. That's how the mechanics will do it.
