Fuel sender is likely coated from our wonderful fuel and there is actually less fuel in your tank then you think. The fuel sender works off resistance and is less accurate at low levels when the extra resistance from 'dirty fuel' skews your sensor. GM has a really good fuel cleaner that you can dump into your tank. Just ask a dealer, they will know exactly what you need

If the check engine light is not on, it could be low fuel pressure and/or a dirty fuel filter.
On this model the fuel filter is in the gas tank.

Third try here, if you've aleady received this, disregard...the message just doesn't appear to go through...I have a 93 Dodge Stealth R/T. My son wants to change the oil/filter and fuel filter but the car...

got a friend with a forklift? might try the scissor jacks that are almost flat and you have to twist the handle a million times.....problem does indeed sound like a fuel filter. after changing fuel filter, might also try fuel system cleaner just as a precation. also, maybe try going to a jiffy lube or similar place that stands in a bay under car without lifting it.

If i go to restart after i turn it off it won't restart

These cars have a main relay. I would replace it ASAP. This may not be the problem but if you do nothing and wait till it doesnt start you may end up stranded somewhere. Other than that if the car works no one will be able to figure it out till it quits for good. You could have someone check the fuel pressure and ramp the fuel pump for proper function. Sometimes a fuel pump that is failing will show a bad electrical pattern in a graphing meter

Cannot start the engine

First you should check that fuel arrives to the engine - disconnect the fuel line from the injectors ramp and put it in a bottle, turn key into run (no need to turn the engine) fuel should flow.
Next you should check that the injectors are functioning - connect a voltmeter set on 500V DC to one of the injectors and turn the engine, it should show more than 15V.
Next you should check that you have spark at the sparkplug.

Can i get a 97 Monte Carlo high enough to replace

You should have plenty of room. Most low garage roofs are at least 8 feet high and the cars are around five feet. You can jack it up. Please be sure you have it well secured. Some of those ramps that are sold are not very strong. I would suggest you use fixed jack stands. If you don't have any use blocks and set them under the frame as a safety. Safety is more important than saving money.

Hope this helps.

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me".

To your concern:
  • Ramping, no start - is significant. it would indicate that possibly the low fuel was agitated due to the stiff angle and dirt, sand, sludge inside the tank was stirred and got inside the intake port of the fuel pump/filter;
  • Fuel Filter - to my knowledge, there is no actual separate filter. There is a screen incorporated into the fuel pump, or in some versions in the fuel pressure regulator. Both are on top of the tank. Looks like you have to bring the entire tank down and check the inside, pump, regulator. Additionally, it may help to use a carb/injector cleaner (pls select appropriate type gas or diesel) when filling up the tank so as to clean hopefully the fuel lines, injector pump, injector, combustion chamber and valves.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
