If the pulley is turning while the engine is running then the compressor is most likely ok. If the freon is low the compressor will not engage. You need to check the pressure of the system and make sure it does not have a leak. You can buy a recharge kit at your local auto parts store and they come with a gauge. Turn the ac on full and listen for a clicking sound. If you have a click sound then it most likely is low freon. If not it could be a control or electrical issue. Very complicated and the system is pressurized if you are not familiar with auto repair work take it in and have it diagnosed by a certified tech.

Ac not working, air compressor clutch not engaging

Hi Adeyeri

Keep in mind that the Clutch won't engage for a few safety reasons.

Temperature inside vehicle
Temperature of compressor or pipes
Pressure inside pipes
Compressor jambed
Eg It's out of refrigerant Gas

You can momentarily engage the clutch by simply giving it +12v to the wire attached to clutch. Usually has a connector close by.
Or
If it has a Relay (click) in fuse box
You can by pass it with a jumper

A quick engage & disengage should allow you to detect possible problem.
But don't over ride the built in safety for more than about a minute.

Cheers
Hope this Helps

check the freon, if there isn't enough it won't engage, could also be the low pressure switch or a fuse.

A/c clutch won't engage

Check your a/c fuse first you want to make sure you have power going to the a/c system If your a/c button light is on when you engage it you most likely have power. Second if your a/c system coolant is low of the recomended freon then so the compressor will NOT engage. This is a start!

Ac won't get cold anymore power to compressor but won't click on clutch won't engage possible problems are compressor or evaporator what do you think?

Has the Freon been checked with a gauge to see if there is enough Freon to allow the system to work. Low or no Freon will not allow the compressor to engage. The low pressure switch is most likely activated due to low freon, and will cause this condition.

I currently have had my air conditioner die on me. When you turn it on it sounds like its working but nothing comes out. As soon as the air conditioning went my car started squealing when I accelerate.

The a/c compressor clutch might have locked up it should be free spinning when not engaged but could cause a belt to squeal and possiblly break if locked up

AC compressor won't engage clutch

Lots of things can cause this, I will list them, easiest first.

A blown fuse or relay can prevent the clutch from kicking in. Low refridgerant charge will also do this, the low pressure switch will prevent the clutch from engaging when there is low refrigerant to prevent damage. You may need to put more in, and you also may need to jump the low pressure switch to get the compressor going to add more in. Very rarely the controls could have gone bad, which are the buttons on the dash. Id check out the fuses, relays, and pressure in the system first. A shop may even do a free diagnosis for you.

Locate wires coming from compressor clutch and trace to nearest plug that you can unplug. Turn on A/C to max cooling. If clutch not engaged (center of compressor drive pulley not spinning with pulley), unplug compressor clutch wires and use multimeter to check voltage going to compressor clutch. If voltage is around 12 volts or more, then clutch should be engaged when plugged in. Plug clutch wires back in (with motor still running and ac set to max). If clutch still not engaged, then clutch definitely bad because 12V signal should engage it.
