Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Looks like that the differential gearings are worn out. As a first course of action please check the rear differential fluid and fill if lacking. If it still doesn't help then you will need to have it replaced for sooner or later this will give you trouble and we don't want that to happen.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

Brakes make a whistle noise when applied and sometimes a low grown or grinding when coming to a slow stop or start.

A grinding or rumbling noise can also be symptoms of a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint in a driveshaft. A worn wheel bearing can also cause a 'whistling' sound (as can a worn CV joint).

A grinding noise with brakes is either worn pads causing metal to metal contact on the brake disk/rotor, or the brake backing plate catching on a spinning rotor ... or a loose/missing anti squeal brake shim (they stop the pads from rattling and vibrating).

However, as you say a mechanic has looked at the brakes and can't find anything wrong .. I think I would begin to suspect a wheel bearing or constant velocity joint on the driveshaft (front wheel drive cars).

High pitch droning sound

There is a metal tab on some pads that contacts the rotor to make hideous noises telling the driver they need to replace the brake pads. It's in your owner's manual.

Metal to metal knocking sound stops when applying brake.

I just had the same issue. First, check the lug nuts and make sure they aren't loose. If that's not the issue check the brake components. There is a spring that attaches to the caliper to keep pressure on the brake. It's a $7.99 part that was missing that drove us crazy for months! We were sure it was the cv joint! Easy fix!!!

After installing new front rotors and pads on a 07 Mercury Milan there is a bad grinding noise

Hi Julie, Check the back plates behind the discs. Some times after working on the brakes the back plates are bent and cause the sound you're reporting. The ABS rotors, if correct should not come into contact with the sensors. Are the brakes efficient when applied? If not make sure they have been installed the correct way around. I have known mechanics to fit them with the metal part of the pad rubbing onto the disc! Anything is possible. Regards John

We had a recall 03 windstar ABS light was on all time we had front and back brakes replaced ford checked said rear axle ok but, light is still on and brakes make a terrible noise and sometimes they go to...

I own a 2001 Windstar. Your noisy brake problem could be nothing more that new brakes being broken in. I have done many brake jobs on my 2001 Windstar as well as other vehicles that I have owned. To prevent this problem from occuring, I apply a thin film of Disc Brake Quieter directly to each brake pad during the installation process. This quiets the brakes during the break in period. I hope this helps.

The abs light is on in my car and the brakes are terrible what could be the problem was told that my abs modulator was shorting out

The light can be on for many reasons. Brake fluid level. Wheel spin sensor. Worn brake pads (if they have a sensor) Bad pressure sensor When you say terrible what do you mean? Shaking? Squeaking? Sqealing? (metal to metal grinding) The brakes continually pulsate?

As far as shorting out, has your car gone in very high water? If you pull the fuse for the ABS does it stop being terrible? (brakes should work fine without fuse)

No matter the car all hydraulic brakes work the same. The braking system can work without ABS, provided the ABS isn't the problem.

When I hear "shorting out" this means to me something is wrong but the person doesn't know what it is. Actual shorting is rare.

Have problems with rear brakes, when I apply them, so loud it sounds like a garbage truck stoping

that would be the sound of metal to metal a metalic noise that sounds when its time to change the brakes. or you have a brake fluid leak at the wheel cylinder witch is inside the brake drum

Have put new bracks on frond an back an they squeal an make aiot of noise

Have you went through rain puddles lately this can cause them to squeal. If this is not your problem then i would set the adjuster on the brakes.... look near the bottom of the brakes for a dial with teeth and turn them downward to set the brakes back a little.... your brakes could be set too close still. Hope this helped ;)
