Check in relay box on passenger side near firewall for fuel pump relay.
By -pass, no such luck that I' aware of, sorry.

Evap vent solenoide is stuck closed. Start by replacing the valve and checking the hose to the valve for clogs...this is located between the cab of the truck and the bed of the truck on the driver side (can be seen if you look down through the crack)....If this doesn't work then check the fuel filler neck hose for kink or restriction this is the hose that goes from the gas cap to the fuel tank.

Well if theres power going to the relay but not out, then you need a new relay. If theres power in and out of the relay, you might need a new fuel pump. The electric fuel pumps inside the tank are actually lubricated by the fuel as it pumps it, and if it runs dry long enough, it can burn out the pump

If it starts with gas down carb, then pump, pump relay, is faulty, or plugged fuel filter. Or carb floats sticking.

Here are two ways:
You can take the filler hose off from the gas tank and put a siphon hose in there. Siphon it into 5 gallon cans.

Another way is to pull off the main gas feed line that goes from tank to the engine. Just find a convenient spot to pull the line apart, like possibly right before the fuel filter. Then you will need to activate the fuel pump to have it push the gas out. The easiest way to activate the pump is to find the fuel pump relay (under the hood in the fuse/relay block) and pull it out. Then use a short jumper wire into the two correct terminals where the FPR plugs in. This will automatically start the fuel pump and you can push all the gas out of the tank.
Most of the time, the two terminals at the FPR will be numbered 30 and 87. Look on the relay for terminal identification. You are jumping the main power feed line at the relay to the line going to the fuel pump. Do not guess, or you could damage your engine computer if you put the jumper wire in the wrong terminal. At the relay, you are jumping the power side of relay. The other terminals at the relay are for the coil side of the relay. Jump the power side!

That's the best way to do it. Look at the bottom of the relay, #30 and #87 are the ones you want to jump. Remove the gas line from the fuel filter. You probably should replace it anyway.

Need to drain fuel tank


Okay, this is going to sound a bit different but it works. It is simple and will remove most of the gasoline with the least effort.

Go online and look up the fuel pump Relay and "jumping" this Relay for your year and model car. I did this for my 2002 Grand Marquis and removed about 16 gallons in about 15 minutes. Remove the fuel pump Relay and put a decent gauge wire in the #27 and #34 terminals in the Powerbox only when you want to pump out the gas. Verify these 2 terminals with the article about jumping a Relay. This will cause the fuel pump to run continuously, use only when ready.

You will need a Tire valve stem removal tool and a length of rubber fuel line(4-5 feet) about 1/4 to 5/16 inner diameter. On the Drivers side of the fuel rail there is a test port. It has a valve similar to a tire stem. Remove the valve core. Insert the fuel line over this test port and secure with a small hose clamp.

Have a fuel container ready to pump fuel into. In a well ventilated area you are now ready to pump fuel.

Since the fuel tank has baffles there is little way to drain the tank without dropping the tank and turning in a way to allow for the fuel to run out.

Even disconnecting the disposable fuel filter is not without complications and you would still need to trigger the fuel pump. So for the expense of rubber hose and a valve stem tool the above method is easier.

How to drain your fuel without removing tank


Try lowering the tank enough to get the filler hose off, then you can get a siphon hose into the filler opening.

Or, you could open the fuel line at the filter, then jumper the fuel pump relay terminals. Pump will turn on and push gas out the line. Careful to get your jumper wire into the right terminals. You can damage the computer if you put voltage into the wrong terminal. The relay will have one hot at all times terminal- find that with a test light. Then you will jump the hot terminal to the terminal that has the fuel pump wire going to the gas tank. The relay should have terminal descriptions on it. The jumper wire goes with the two power side terminals, not with the coil side of relay. Post back if that's not clear.

How do I drain the fuel tank


I can tell you several things and will add a few things because I do not know why you want to drain the tank.
A Part called an Inertia switch will interrupt the power to the fuel pump if it is tripped. It has a Reset button and depending on your Year Grand Marquis, the part is in the trunk next to the Air suspension. Your pump may be good.
Clogged fuel pump. There is a plastic screen which is on the fuel pump pick-up. It can disintegrate and clog the pump. Blow air into the fuel rail test port to shed the screen fragments back into the tank. Then try the next paragraph.
Working pump with Low pressure. You can remove 2 things to pump out the gas.through the fuel rail. The test port on the fuel rail has a valve similar to an air valve stem. Removal of the valve seat from the test port allows you an open line to drain the tank.
Go on the internet and find the procedures for jumping the fuel pump relay switch. The relay is in a black box which is piggy-backed on a Powerbox on the Drivers side of the engine compartment. The top of the piggy-back has 3 relays and a diode labeled and the trio slide out of the compartment by releasing some retaining snaps protruding out of the case.
If you look under the relay there will be numbers by the contacts. I want to say that #27 and #34 are the two to be jumped. I may have the wrong numbers or your Year car may be different.
One pin is a power source-the other goes directly to the fuel pump. With the ignition ON, placing a wire between these two contact holes will power your fuel pump.
Have a hose clamped on the fuel rail test port which you removed the needle seat from and put the hose end into a gas can.
I pumped close to 17 gallons of fuel from my 2002 Grand Marquis in a short time.
The gas tanks have baffles. I tried 3 different hose sizes and could not get one to pass the baffles. The fuel filter disconnect can be a problem, especially with fuel pressure. So the easiest way to drain the fuel is through the test port.
You can also siphon through the port with a hand drawn pump.

Hook a fuel pressure gauge to fuel rail on motor
& jump relay to pump out fuel

Stop before the tank is empty or you ruin the pump

If it is dead-- try a vinyl hose down the filler to syphon
or remove the rubber filler hose to tank & put hose in there

Can you drain the gas out of a gas tank through tha fule line located on the fule filter on a 94 bravada oldsmobile?


If the pump is working you can jump the relay and it will pump fuel. If the pump's dead then some pumps will allow fuel through, it's worth a try.

I am trying to sifen old gas out of 1997 Mercury Sable that has been sitting for 3years to replace gas befor trying to start. I have a hose small enough to fit down fill pipe but stop befor entering tank?


There is a flap in the filler tube that won't allow a hose into the tank. I would disconnect the fuel line and jump the fuel pump relay and run the pump to drain the gas.

What you need to do is drop the fuel tank and put a new fuel pump in it. I would drain the gas and put new gas in after you get the pump changed.

Option 1 the easiest way is to jump the fuel pump relay with the fuel feed line at the engine disconnected from the engine and connected to some sort of catch basin (bucket, gas can, etc.) this allows you to use the vehicles fuel pump to drain the fuel. All you have to do is find the fuel pump relay, then jump the positive side (key off) to power to make the fuel pump run, use that to pump all the bad fuel out.

Option 2 is to remove the filler neck and check valve from the tank (a real pain on that car)

Option 3 is to remove and drain the tank... this is the most costly and time consuming option as the alldata labor guide quotes 8 hours labor time.. so i would advise option 1


As for damage to the vehicle/engine that is always possible with a contaminated fuel, my advice would be just to get the bad fuel out as soon as possible, get good gas in it and give it a try.
