Gas caps don't go bad often but if they don't hold pressure for some reason (many folks leave them loose or loose them) some errors can occur with the powertrain emissions system. If the cap and seal looks generally good and you've gotten a check engine light indicating vapor return/tank out of range or something to that effect, you can fill it up and wait (up to a tank or two) for it to "recalibrate". Or you may want to have the code/codes erased and reset anyway so they're gone from memory.

What happens when you drive without a gas cap


ok on todays automobiles the gas cap does more than just seal the gas tank. Now they run a return line to the tank. this does 2 things. it returns un used fuel and vapors back to the tank , and it pressurizes the tank to help improve the fuel pump.

Now as it is possible running without the gas cap may cause problems I am not 100 % positive that is your only problem.

It sound like the knock sensor is detecting the knock you mentioned and is trying to retard the timing to fix it . In doing so it has retarded it to far causing the engine to loose power and eventually stall. I would first replace the gas cap. then run a good gas additive to a full tank of gas to clean out any water and dirt that may have gotten into the tank while the cap was off. now the issue of the knock as you described. is it a knock or a ping? A knocking sound is loud metallic hammering noise. a ping is a ting not very loud. if it is a loud metallic sound I would have a reputable mechanic check it soon, as it could be a serious issue. Ping can be caused by bad or weak gas or cheap low octane gas. I would run a mid grade gas in it and see if it fixed the issue.

The gas tank is pressurized to about 7 PSI and after that the pressure relief in the gas cap lets go so the condition you describe may be normal or you need a new gas cap.. So you may just be hearing the fuel pump run and it is defective if it is that noisy.

If it a cracked cap it's always going to run badly. First put some gas treatment to remove water from gas. if it still runs bad inspect the cap for cracks. even I small crack will be hard to see. Mark the wire location B4 pulling off the cap. in a dark place put a light in cap and block around the bottom to inspect sides for crack. I would try gas/water separator first.

Your gas cap could be bad. They are designed to hold a vaccum, if there is no vaccum it will trigger your check engine light with a EVAP system problem. It could also be from not tightenig the cap down properly(don't worry, it happens more than the world will ever know). Always make sure to tighten the cap until it clicks three to five times. And you should be able to get your gas cap tested for free at your local state vehicle safty inspection location. Gas cap testing is a part of most states vehicle inspection process. a bank 1 or a bank 2 generally means an 02 sensors bad. or you may simply have a faulty gas cap. i would try the gas cap 1st,make sure it's tight, the engine running for a few minutes,then cut engine off. then open gas cap,do you hear pressure [air] releasing from the fuel tank? ok if not that,then if bank 2 is really bad,your check engine light would be on. but if the idle control sensor is bad,no light would be on at all. and it[engine] would idle up and down.or would'nt idle at all,or would idle up and down,just like what you've described. good luck and thank you for choosing fixya.com and please let me know if i'ved assisted you!

To answer the first problem you need to check it for codes. To do this you need to jump TE1 and E1 terminals in the diagnositic plug then turn the key on. The check engine light will flash trouble codes. Let me know what codes you get and ill tell you what they mean. As for the second problem. Are you sure the clutch is good. Because you are describing a bad clutch.

OK, if pressure doesn't build up in the gas tank, a bad gas cap code can come up.
Replace the cap to see if that helps. But, if it still comes up with a code for the gas cap being loose or missing, then the filler neck or the gas tank or the evaporative hoses may be loose or leaking.

I'm getting a code p0440 i replace the gas cap but my engine light came back on same code can someone help me and let me know what to do next


well if you bought a good gas cap and the right one you need to check for a leak at the evaporative lines check the pcv valve and for any vaccum leaks if that is not it you could have a bad evap vent selonoid or bad charcoal canister. it is a simple diagnostic if you had a scanner and a smoke machine.

Idle prblems


Check the distributor cap-there's a fairly good chance there's a fine crack in it allowing moisture in, which could cause the problem u describe. Check the inside and outside for evidence of a fine line. If the distrib. cap hasn't been changed in quite a while, u should change it anyway, not an expensive item. Let me know how u make out.
