Timing belt or chain?
If you have chain align the dark mark of the chain to gear marks and release the tentioner . after you turn one time the mark wont match to the chain for long time.
if you have belt. the marks are on the dots on the head and block and will match every second turn on crankshaft
after you install belt/chain turn with hand ,don't start till you're sure the piston don't touch the valve .
with chain you can mark a dot on the block and head with marker to see if will come back to the same spot on same time crank and cam but is not accurate .
good luck

I have a nezzana truck with a z-24 eng I've. Put in a new timeing chain have all the marks lined up but its hard to trun over help

Did the old chain jump time or break? I think this is an "interference" engine, which means if the cain had jumped time or broke you may have internal damage--bent valves, broken pistons, etc. If the engine turns without bad noises, you might run a compression test to see if big damage exists.

How to line up timing chain marks on 2002 town and country 3.8 eng.

So I'm assuming it's twin cam so each cam has a mark on the sprockets line them up to a mark on the top of the valve covers and the crank goes straight up if the oil pump is being run by the belt it also has its on marks don't worry about the water pump

How to replace timing chain on351W

remove radiator and water pump. Turn engine over until you get TDC on hasrmonic balancer . REmove balancer and timing cover. the marks on the chain should be lining up with marks on the gears. if out turn the engine over 180 degrees and check mark positions. Undo the nuts holding on the cam gear and slide it off along with the crank gear togeather.. replace the chain with the new chain marks in the same spot and slide both back on. Do not turn anything and it should be consistant to when it was removed . If there are not marks on the chain (shiny links) then check for dots on the gear teeth and they should align with each other through the shaft centres. Reassembly is the reverse procedure.

How to set the timing chain on a 1995 nissan maxima

There are marks on each cam gear and on the crank gear, there are pointers or marks on the engine castings right by each gear, these all have to line up perfectly, there should also be a tensioner for the chain or belt. do not attempt to start the enging if they are not lined up, it is an interference engine and will damage the valves if the engine is out of time, check a repair manual for pictures of the marks to be sure

When checking my timing chain i found my marks dont line up i think it jumped timming. one is on the top (12) and the crank is also at 12 and yes it is on tdc

Turn the crank one more revolution. The two marks will now line up since the cam gear turns a half turn For every full turn the crank makes. A timing chain will not jump half of a gear with out some sort of evidence that it has done so.

I have a `994 chevy 2.2l engin. the timing chain broke. put new chain on lined marks up. eng. is missing on 3and 4 cylinder

Have you checked compression in those cylinders? I would bet they are low and the probably cause is bent valves from the broken timing chain.

To set the timing you should turn the No.1 piston to TDC, then turn the cam to where both valves on No.1 are close. The timing mark on the sproket should now be in line with the mark on the cilinder head. With No. 1 still on TDC fit the chain.
After fitting turn the engin a few times by hand to make sure there's not a valve pushing against a piston.

Timing chain setting

Your camshaft and your crankshaft have marks on them. Your timing chain also has marks on it. The timing marks MUST ALL line up at the same time before you move your internal parts. The easiest way to do this is to take out your spark plugs and after tou get the chain, chain tensioner and chain damper on, turn the engine with a wrench watch the marks. The number 1 cylinder should be at tdc.
