If you\'re talking about a so-called "smog" pump, then yes. And unlike the older ones, say from the 70\'s, you can\'t remove it to improve horsepower and gas mileage. By 1989 the smog pump was so interconnected with the computer controlled emissions controls, removal does nasy things and in most states is illegal.

Not really. The computer follows a set range of sensor data and trying to "trick" it will only make it run worse. The computer program is set to get as much horsepower as it can out of the least amount of fuel.

Percentage wise what is the difference between wheel horsepower and brake horsepower

There's no set percentage to what the difference is between brake and wheel horsepower. It all depends on the specific car and components and engine. Some cars have a huge percentage of horsepower lost while some have minimal loss.

1998 bmw 323i how can i get more horsepower out of my car???

That is an excellent engine, smooth, efficient, reliable, but if you wanted to go fast, I fear that you bought the wrong car. The 323 was optimized for torque, not horsepower, so it does a really good job of moving a relatively heavy small car with a small displacement naturally aspirated engine.
The things you can do will generally not be cost-effective, but if you are determined, I would suggest that you visit the Dinan and Turner Motorsports websites. Bavarian Motorsport is also good but they are mostly known for cosmetic enhancements and lights.
Take care to select modifications that compliment each other. That is, don't put on a chip that enhances high RPM performance and then bolt on an intake manifold or exhaust manifold that is designed to improve low-end torque.

I have a engine which is a 3970010 on the block what size is it the code on the front of the block is 05115287k063tkf what size and horsepower what did it come in

Here is a web site that explains the engine you have. It will be a 1975 engine out of a truck with a 145 or 165 horsepower engine. The lesser HP was in referrence with a 2 barrel carburetor

My 89 f250 has no power it wont even spin the tires how do i get more power?

If it is a 6.9 Diesel you won't. If its a gas engine you can try to set the timing, do a tune up, and invest in a K&N airfilter.

If you have the plugs out, check the compression and see what you have to work with before spending a lot of money. If this model still has a carburetor and its a Holley, you can try a richer power valve. If it has Vacuum secondaries Holley makes different springs to open them sooner.

You probably have room under the hood, so see if you can get a spacer for the base of the carburetor. It will improve flow and horsepower.

I want more boost out of my stock 87 Supra Turbo. Not to sound totally clueless, but is there some kind of adjuster on the turbo to turn up? I'm just now leaving the world of carburetors.

hey mate,

You can get a aftermarket part for your car called a boost controller there are many different types manual and electric, if you go to your local car parts store and ask for a boost controller there is a type called a bleed valve which works by restricting boost to your actuator which controlls the wastegate causing it to open slower than it usually would therefore creating more horsepower... * BE CAREFUL THO AS STANDARD ENGINES, ESPECIALLY OLDER ONES CANNOT HANDLE MUCH MORE HP THAN THE FACTORY SETTINGS *

How much more hp would i get with headers and new system

Headers and a freer flowing exhasut just by itself won't gain you alot of power, maybe 20 horsepower. What is needed is a freer flowing intake and fuel supply along with a better ignition curve to fully take advantage of the freer flowing exhaust. If running fuel injection, you would need a performance chip for the ECU/PCM,to really take advantage of the exhaust system. If running a carburetor, the jets would beed to be increased in size slightly, and a performance curve programmed into the distributor.Think of an engine as a huge iron lung, air in,air out. When you make modifications or improvements to increase the amount of air flow overall, air IN is as important as air OUT.They both need to be adressed is what i'm saying,to take full advantage of any mods.Providing the intake, fuel and ignition are addressed along with the headers and exhaust, expect a good 50 horsepower gain overall (V 8) if not more.Higher gains will require a more radical camshaft, and some driveability will be sacrificed there.
