Buy a cheap code reader ( $20 ) plug it in the OBD2 port which has to be no more than 3 feet from the steering column and clear the code(s).
If the check engine light comes right back on after you have cleared the code(s),read the code(s) and correct the problem(s).
Clearing the Check Engine light does not repair anything - it only turns off the light and clears the error codes. The problem(s) that caused the light to occur are still going to be present and the light will probably come back on, anytime from a few minutes to a few days depending on the problem(s). What you NEED to do is to extract the error codes that come with the light and take the corrective action(s) to repair the deficiencies. That will probably make the vehicle able to pass smog checks. Of course, now that you've cleared the Check Engine light, you've also erased the error codes, so you will need to wait for it to return to get the data you need for repairs.
You need an OBD-II scantool to reset the Check Engine light. Places like Autozone will read your codes for you but most will not reset the Check Engine light because of liability issues. You need to either purchase a code reader with reset capability or find someone who has one to do it for you.
To reset a check engine light you have two options. You can use an OBD II scanner(They can do this for you at most places like autozone, oriellys, napa for free. You just go in and ask them). The other option is to disconnect the battery for 1 minute and then reconnect. This should clear the light. The check engine light does not refer to oil changes, this is for emmision and fuel management as well as a diagnostic tool for other engine components. The only wasy to clear this is to have the dealer clear them or repair what ever is causing the light. It will however clear it self after about 20 times of starting the car and the computer not seing any more bad scans from what ever caused the light to come on in the first place. You can have Auto Zone pull the codes from your car and tell you what caused the light to come on in the first place. To clear the aoil change light turn the key on and press the gas pedal 3 times all the way to the floor without the engine running.
sad to say sir that how to clear the code is not easy in manual clearing, you need diagnostic tool to clear the dtc, but some dtc will cleared by 20-50 consecutive warm up if no other trouble code detected by the computer
you can use the scanner to clear the computer or even disconnect the battery for a minute or two then reconnect it but if the light comes back it needs to be fixed to keep the light off. just fixing the problem won't turn the light off
