Catherine, Check your cruise control fuse as a first step. Could be a bad brake switch, faulty vacuum line, faulty multi function switch,etc., may have to have a good Tech. diagnose and estimate repair.
on the dryer there is a switch with 2 wires, disconnect connector and bypass the two terminals with engine running you will hear compressor clutch click and engage...if yes feel low pressure tube for cold ..if it does the switch is defect if not low Freon in system

The not engaging leads me to believe that the problem is inside the transfer case. To verify that, remove the front driveshaft and engage the unit. if it still stalls the engine that's all you need to know. There should be plenty of used units available in local scrapyards for a reasonable price.
Try unhooking the battery. When caddies see they are low on freon or have a bad pressure switch, they set a code and lock out the compressor function. Unhooking the battery for a minute should reset this.
