Question about Pontiac Sunfire
I was driving my 96 pontiac sunfire and suddenly the dash gauges stopped, the lights all came on and the car slowed then went normal then slowed again and normal again, did that a couple of times in a row until finally it slowed and stopped with gauges going up and down and the lights staying on, but the light that indicates what gear I'm in turned off while the warning lights stayed on. turn the car off a few minutes and it started and got me home. now it wont start, it will crank but no turn over no matter what. something similar happened a year ago and it was a bad battery cable, could it be something else this time? battery and alternator are less than two years old.

you need to find the fuel pressure release around the fuel rail press the little tab when the car dies. If there is no fuel coming out from that point, your fuel pump is going.

Having worked for an Isuzu dealer I have seen this a lot with aftermarket alternators from places like auto-zone, napa etc. For some reason they will do strange things in these vehicles. The fix was to get a Isuzu alternator. We did have good luck with Beck Arnly alternators also. We also had a local rebuilder repair some with good luck too. If all else fails get a used one.

the battery says 12 volts but may be dropping to 4 or 5 under a load...i would suggest jumpstarting the car and see what happens.the battery should read in the high 12 volts and not less than 9.5 under cranking. the dash lights go out on your car when starting, and the alarm will go off ,and disable the ignition if the voltage is too low in cranking the car because the computer will shut it down and activate the anti theft.....check your battery posts are tight. best of luck

Your problem is pointing to the alternator. Since you say the alternator is only a year old, the I would check the tension on the belt (deflection should be about 1/2 an inch), and the belt itself. Your problem most likely lies in either the belt, belt tensioner (if applicable), or alternator.
