take radiator cap loose to release pressure

once pressure is released tighten cap

SOURCE: ford ranger fuel shutoff switch

i bet its the ecm relay if it starts cutting out then dies then it is the ecm relay i had one that did the same thing if its your fuel relay unplug it clean the terminals and plug it back in if it still does it buy a new one and replace if you bypass it you take a chance of burning the truck too the ground and if ya dont really care about that then find your positive wire in the plug with the key on and hook it too the one that runs your fuel pump so its hard wired

SOURCE: I have a 1988 Ford Ranger and the engine won't

If it's trying to start then this would indicate that it is getting spark to the plug's (if its a petrol) Check if it is getting fuel ( petrol or diesel) Its most likely a fuel problem. If petrol check the carb. first pake off the intake at the top of the carb. and pour a small bit of petrol in and try starting it should start up for a few second's if this work's check the fuel lines filters etc. If its diesel check fuel filter an and if its clean then it could be drawing air into the system usually at the filter simple check is disconect the fuel line to the filter and the one fron the filter to the pump. join these two pipes together get a suitable piece of pipe that will fit tightly between them try turning again mite take a bit of turning as the system will have to bleed itself. Let me know if you get it fixed and please add if it's petrol or diesel save me a lot of explaining we can get it going no matter what the problem is. But as you asked this is somewhere to start.

1988 ford ranger 2.9 ltr engine stalls while driving , restarts in a few minutes usually

There are several possibilities, but based on how you described the symptoms I suggest a profile igniton pickup. On these systems the failure usually begins as dropping a cylinder occasionally, like a misfire, mostly during high underhood temperatures, will manifest into stalling and finally into a stall with no resart condition. Symptoms are most likely to occur in summer. The pickup is inside the distributor and the distributor must be disassembled to install it,the trickiest part being the removal and installation of the distributor drive gear. They are iron and easily broken. The simplest solution is another distributor. The ignition modules typically do not fail in this manner, but this is classic for the pickup coil. A code for loss of pip signal should be present, it is possible for a code to not be present, though very unlikely. Having worked on these systems for years this would be my first area of diagnosis.

I have a 1988 ranger and I think I have a fuel delivery problem. The engine will turn over but It will not keep running.

Have you tried spraying starter fluid into the intake manifold while someone else tries to start it? If it will start that way, then it is most likely the fuel pump needs replaced. You can also try to push in the fuel primer, it is on the passenger side if it is a 2.9. It will or should have a black cap similar to what you would see on a tire inflation valve. Unscrew the cap (do not lose it!) and while someone turns over the motor press the needle in the primer in with a screwdriver, if fuel squirts out then your fuel pump is ok.
