How many miles are on the engine did you change the oil if oil is present on the filter you may have blown the filter gasket or double gasketed the filter is the tapping a hard tap will it turn over it's hard to say but it sounds serious.

SOURCE: 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee will not start. I turn

Just a click? a solid click like the solinoid(bendix) is engaging? Two possible options, the solinoid is bad, or the starter motor is bad. If you have fair mechanical skill, you can try shorting around the soliniod with something. Be forewarned this can be dangerous. If it is the soliniod, sparks will fly as the starter tries to turn and unless you have something specifically made for it, it is likely whatever you are using will get hot! With the configuration of Jeep starters, you can use a screwdriver..... Or, take it out and have it tested...

Have you relapced the fuel pump and filter? Take it to a garage and have the fuel pump pressure checked. It very common for fuel pumps or a clog in the line to cause this.

there is also a small valve body you are supposed to replace when replaceing the phasers... also there is a ssm for replacing the valve lash adjusters. alot of time the small engine tick you hear can be a cracked exhaust manifold too so checking those really close is heavily advised because the cracks are really hard to see sometimes. i have seen broken push rods on these engines and they can be a pain to pinpoint where the noise is comming from. hope this helps

SOURCE: 2006 ford f350 deisel turns

the diesel engine is a 6.0L or a 6.4L? because the 6.0L don't use electronic throttle control. they control the demand of diesel threw the high pressure oil system they have a sensor call injector pressure regulator. this sensor is responsible of maintain the proper pressure in the high pressure oil system so that the engine could start . i also suggest you to check if it is any leak on the high pressure oil system or if the low pressure system is delivering the pressure required for the high pressure system to work properly. to do that you most have a scan tool. also you can check the pressure of the diesel pump that its in the chassis to eliminate the high pressure oil system as the cause of your concern. if u don't have the proper gauges to check the pressure of the diesel pump you could remove the cap of the small fuel filter that is next to the oil filter remove the filter and put the ignition switch in the on position and see in the container if you have a fast or slow filling. if you encounter that the filling is too slow then your problem is with the fuel diesel pump that is on the chassis this pump is called HFCM, Horizontal Fuel Control Module

fuel pressure regulator symtoms:Minor car problems are usually a result of an abnormal pressure conditions in the fuel system. A high fuel pressure reading can result in heavy emissions, due to a high running engine. The problems arising out of this situation can be as varied as misfiring, clogging of system, racing and so on. On the other hand, a low pressure in the fuel regulator may cause a delayed start or no start, misfiring and abrupt ignition.
