Question about 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

Both cooling fans for the radiator are not working. The car is overheating when we are stuck in traffic, idling at a stand still. I am assuming it is either a fuse or a relay issue. Where are these two components on the vehicle?

Check for a switch at lower part of rad. Should see a wire harness & plug on a sensor at bottom of rad. This sensor/switch also operates fan on/off according to coolant temperature. You may need to disconnect battery to get at it safely.

Have you double checked the electronic switch type thermistat mounted on the radiator that senses the temperature of the anti freeze. You can jumper around the switch while the car is started and the fan should start running (watch your fingers).

CHECK TO SEE IF THE FAN RELAY IS FUNCTIONING BY SWAPPING IT WITH ANOTHER LIKE THE WIPER RELAY IF THEY ARE THE SAME. IF THE WIPERS WORK WITH THE A/C RELAY IN IT'S PLACE, THEN TRY REPLACING THE FAN FUSE. IF NONE OF THESE METHODS MAKE THE FAN TURN ON THEN REPLACE THE COOLANT TEMP SENSOR LOCATED NEAR THE UPPER RADIATOR HOSE INLET TOWARDS THE FRONT OF THE ENGINE. SOURCE: Fuse location/ Cooling fan relay location

The relay for the cooling fan is located on the left side (north america drivers side) of the rad about half way down or near the top (may vary) there may be two relays or one, replace them both. As for the fuse location it should be under your dash (fuse panel) looks like a big silver fuse similar to a zippo lighter, it will be marked in fine print "engine fan".

It depends, how long is it staying on after you shut the car off and how hot is the temp guage when you turn it off? The fan circuit is separate from the ignition and is designed to run until the engine reads a specific temp irregardless of whether the ignition is on or not. Hope this helps.

Overheating when I sit idle.


Over heating the engine is a serious concern. With the hood raised you should hear the motorized fan turn on just behind the radiator as the engine requires additional cooling.. If you look in from the rear of the radiator you should see the fan blades.

This electric powered motor operates on a thermostat and when the engine temperature rises this fan should come on. I'm assuming from your description that when driving and air is flowing through the radiator as the car travels the engine is nor overheating.

Check fan motor thermostat, check fan motor and check wiring.

if it cools down at idle this suggests the cooling fan is working...check temperature of upper and lower radiator hoses if one is hot while the other is cold suspect thermostat...if they are equal...remove radiator cap while engine is COLD and start vehicle check to see if as the car warms up the coolant in the radiator is swirling or circulating...if not suspect waterpump

My engine temp gauge goes way up when the car is stuck in traffic, when I begin to roll the temperature gauge goes back down. I assume that this is a sensor issue, can this be changed easily?


I would assume that the sensor is probably doing EXACTLY what it is designed to do....measure engine temperature! An engine will get hot when sitting in traffic if the radiator cooling fans are not working. The engine temperature will then go back down when the vehicle starts moving and air begins to flow through the radiator.
Get your radiator cooling fans checked!

What engine? i'll assume it's a v-6 is the radiator/coolant level proper? is the belt on the water pump? when it's running or idling before it overheats or as it's getting hot does the engine cooling fans come on? if you stand in front of the van at grille you will hear fans start up and run as it gets to >215*f or you should. if you don't it probably is the fan relay as these are common to go bad. it's a little electrical assy. located on the left side of the radiator shroud/support area best reached from underneath. they are not cheap and they are kind of hard to see and get to. if all the above is working your thermostat could be stuck shut and you'll need a flush and thermostat change.

When idling my jeep overheats. The cooling fan is running and it speeds up when temperature goes up. The temperature gets close to 260 degrees and the engine tries to stall. when I start moving it cools...


At idling speed an engine does build up a lot of heat and the cooling fan will kick in. In slow moving traffic or traffic jams the temperature gauge can touch the red - particularly on hot days. The reason it cools down when you start moving is because of the air flow through the radiator.

Presumably there are no leaks from the cooling system otherwise you would have mentioned it. In normal circumstances the fan will not be running as you are driving at speed, as the air-flow through the radiator is sufficient to cool things. The fan only kicks in to get rid of excess heat - and this usually occurs at idling speed or after you have parked the car.

If the fan is running all the time as you drive, this points to either a fault in the fan switch, or the car is running too hot. presumably in normal driving the fan isn't running and the temperature gauge reads normal?

It is common - in stationary traffic many cars overheat (particularly big engined models) try to stall and 'cut out'. Restarting can be difficult until the engine cools down.

Is your car overheating in normal driving conditions or just at idle speed? Overheating in normal driving conditions can be caused by things like a failing water pump, blocked radiator, collapsed hose, faulty thermostat or, in the worst case scenario, cylinder head problems.

Overheating at idling speed is 'common'. Check your coolant level. If your car isn't using/losing coolant then there probably is no major problem. You can flush out the cooling system and refill with new coolant - and also check your radiator. Are the cooling fins crumbling with age? Or maybe they're partly clogged with insects and debris from the road? A blast with a hosepipe wil sort that out ..

The question is how much does your car overheat in normal driving? If it doesn't .. it appears as though you have nothing to worry about as such. Most cars have 2 speed fans... the 2nd faster stage kicks in at some point dependant on engine temperature. Perfectly normal.

u should check for a faulty thermostat first, they are only a few quid and easily replaced. if no change ur most likely faults are a blocked radiator or faulty water pump. u dont sayhow old ur van is but after the thermostat go to the radiator, when its hot check the bottom of the rad to make sure its hot, also brown water means u need to bback flush ur cooling system. even tho u have changed some sensors doesnt mean u got the fan switch sender, dash board sender and fan sender tend to be different sensors, so just double check.

Thermostate ranges from overheating to just fine while driving.


is the fan working? if the fan isnt working it will overheat when idling, as it wont be sucking cold air through the radiator. a quick way to diagnose that your cooling system is fine is when stuck in traffic, turn your heaters onto hot, if the engine temp gauge shows that the engine is cooling down, the cooling system will be fine 9/10 times.
