Question about 1990 Ford F150

1990 Ford F150 4.9 ltr, straight 6 cyl. I changed thermostat. It wouldn't stop leaking, tightening more cracked the water valve. I have tried 4 more valves supposedly the right match, the bolt holes won't line up. They were even ordered from Ford Motor Co.The parts man says it's the bolts, but they will go in the holes fine without the water valve. Any suggestions

Did you get the all the old gasket off the intake before you put the new gasket on? Also did you over tighten it and break the housing? Then would be the first thing id look at. Hope that helps.

Go to an auto wrecker. Take the broken one with you and try to find the right one. Somebody may have changed the head or the whole motor on that truck at some point. Maybe you're getting the wrong parts because of it.

Where is the thermstat at in a 1998 ford taurus?


I'm guessing you can't find it because it's in a separate housing or located under the lower battery tray in the housing (depending on model of engine). Even though this is specific for 1998; I believe it's the same for 1996-1999 Taurus's. I have access to illustrations, but only .gif and/or .bmp extensions were available which would not copy here. If you need these, I will try an extension change to .jpg. Good luck, this should be enough info. It is helpful to include the engine size in question, for future reference...

3.0L (2V) Engine

Removal

Drain the engine cooling system so that the engine coolant level is below the water thermostat (8575) as described.
2.Disconnect the upper radiator hose (8260) from the water hose connection (8592) .
3.Remove the three water inlet connection retaining bolts. Remove the water hose connection .
4.Remove the gasket and water thermostat from the water hose connection . Do not reuse gasket.
Installation
1.Install the water thermostat , gasket and water hose connection as illustrated.
2.Install and alternately tighten the retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 10-14 Nm (89-124 lb-in).
3.Connect the upper radiator hose to the water hose connection .
4.Fill the engine cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of Premium Engine Coolant E2FZ-19549-AA (green), (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC, in Canada, Motorcraft CXC-10), or Ford Extended Life Engine Coolant F6AZ-19544-AA (orange), or DEX-COOL coolant, or a coolant meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D and water, as described under Cooling System, Draining, Filling and Bleeding procedure.
5.Start the engine and check all hoses and connections for leaks. Allow the engine to warm up so that the water thermostat opens.
6.Stop the engine. Top off degas bottle as required to maintain minimum cold fill level.

3.0L (4V) Engine
Removal

Drain the engine cooling system so that the engine coolant level is below the water thermostat ; refer to Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section.
2.Raise vehicle on hoist.
3.Disconnect the lower radiator hose (8286) from the water inlet connection.
4.Remove the two water inlet connection retaining bolts. Remove the water inlet connection.
5.Remove the O-ring seal and water thermostat from the water thermostat housing. Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.
6.If required, remove water thermostat housing retaining bolts, water thermostat housing and O-ring from lower radiator hose tube. Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.

Installation
1.Install the water thermostat , O-ring, water thermostat housing (if removed) as shown.
2.Install and alternately tighten the retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb-in).
3.Connect the lower radiator hose to the water inlet connection.
4.Lower vehicle.
5.Fill the engine cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of Premium Engine Coolant E2FZ-19549-AA (green), (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC, in Canada, Motorcraft CXC-10), or Ford Extended Life Engine Coolant F6AZ-19544-AA (orange), or DEX-COOL coolant, or a coolant meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D and water; refer to Cooling System, Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section.
6.Start the engine and check all hoses and connections for leaks. Allow the engine to warm up so that the water thermostat opens.

Removal
Drain the engine cooling system so that the engine coolant level is below the water thermostat ; refer to Cooling System, Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section.

3.Remove power distribution box.
4.Remove battery tray.
5.Disconnect upper radiator hose and position out of the way.
6.Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet connection (8K528) .
7.Remove the two retaining bolts. Remove the water inlet connection .
8.Remove the O-ring seal and water thermostat from the water pump (8501) . Inspect O-ring for damage and replace if necessary.

Thermostat

Installation
1.Install the water thermostat , O-rings and water inlet connection as illustrated.
2.Install and alternately tighten the retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 8-12 Nm (71-106 lb-in).
3.Connect the lower radiator hose to the water inlet connection .
4.Install upper radiator hose . Position spring clamp securely.
5.Install battery tray.
6.Install power distribution box.
7.Install battery.
8.Fill the engine cooling system with a 50/50 mixture of Premium Engine Coolant E2FZ-19549-AA (green), (in Oregon, F5FZ-19549-CC, in Canada, Motorcraft CXC-10), or Ford Extended Life Engine Coolant F6AZ-19544-AA (orange), or DEX-COOL coolant, or a coolant meeting Ford specification WSS-M97B44-D and water; refer to Cooling System, Draining, Filling and Bleeding in this section.
9.Start the engine and check all hoses and connections for leaks. Allow the engine to warm up so that the water thermostat opens.

Location of thermostat


Instructions Things You'll Need:
  • Container
  • Jack and jack stands or wheel ramps (if needed)
  • Screwdriver
  • 13mm socket or wrench
  • Thermostat and gasket

    Turn the drain valve at the bottom of the radiator counterclockwise to drain the coolant from your Ford Taurus into a suitable container. Depending on the size of the container, it may be necessary to lift the front end of your Taurus with a jack and lower it onto jack stands, or use wheel ramps.

  2. 2

    Follow the upper radiator hose to the point where it meets the thermostat housing at the front of the intake manifold. Loosen the hose clamp and pull the radiator hose off the water connection on the thermostat housing.

  3. 3

    Take out the two bolts on the thermostat housing cover with a 13mm socket or wrench and remove the cover. Clean any old gasket residue from the inside of the thermostat housing cover. Pull out the old thermostat.

  4. 4

    Insert the new thermostat into the thermostat housing with the spring-side facing into the engine. Install the new thermostat gasket. Use a spray adhesive to hold the gasket in place, if desired.

  5. 5

    Reinstall the thermostat housing cover. Tighten the bolts to 89-124 in. lbs. Reattach the upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing. Make sure the drain valve on the radiator is closed.

  6. 6

    Fill the radiator with new or reserve coolant. Start your Ford Taurus and allow it to warm up to its normal operating temperature. Check hoses and connections for leaks and tighten hose clamps to stop any leaks, if necessary. Add more coolant as needed.

I need to change my thermastat but can not locate it


REMOVAL & INSTALLATION (4 Cyl. eng.) CAUTION
Never open, service or drain the radiator or cooling system when hot; serious burns can occur from the steam and hot coolant. Also, when draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantities. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.
  1. Position a suitable drain pan under the radiator drain **** and drain the cooling system.
  2. On the 1MZ-FE engine, remove the air cleaner cap assembly. Be sure to label all wiring disconnected.
  3. Disconnect the water temperature switch harness from the water inlet housing (except 5S-FE engines).
  4. Remove the oil filter on 5S-FE engines. On the 1MZ-FE engines, remove the heater hose covering the housing.
  5. Loosen the hose clamp and disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water inlet housing.
  6. Remove the two nuts from the water inlet housing and remove the housing from the water pump studs.
  7. Remove the thermostat and rubber O-ring gasket from the water inlet housing. To install:
  8. Make sure all the gasket surfaces are clean. Clean the inside of the inlet housing and the radiator hose connection with a rag.
  9. Install the new rubber O-ring gasket onto the thermostat. On 2SE and 3S-FE engines, align the jiggle valve of the thermostat with the protrusion on the water inlet housing. On 5S-FE engines, align the jiggle valve with the upper side of the stud bolt. On 2VZ-FE and 3VZ-FE engines, align the jiggle valve with the stud bolt. Insert the thermostat into the housing.   10. Position the water inlet housing with the thermostat over the studs on the water pump and install the two nuts. Tighten the two nuts to 78 inch lbs. (9 Nm) on 4 cyl. engines, 2VZ-FE and 3VZ-FE; 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) and 69 inch lbs. (8 Nm) on 1MZ-FE engines. Fig. 6: Thermostat installation - 2VZ-FE and 3VZ-FE engines 89553g11.gif
    NOTE: Don't forget to install a new O-ring onto the water inlet pipe. Apply soapy water to the O-ring prior to installation.
  11. Connect the lower radiator hose to the inlet housing and install the hose clamp. On the 3VZ-FE, tighten the bolt holding the water inlet hose to the alternator belt adjusting bar to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm). On the 1MZ-FE engine, tighten the bolt retaining the water inlet pipe to the cylinder head to 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  12. Attach the water temperature switch connector.
  13. On the 1MZ-FE engines, install the heater hose removed.
  14. Install the oil filter and check the oil level if removed. Install the air cleaner cap assembly on the 1MZ-FE engines.
  15. Fill the cooling system with a good brand of ethylene glycol based coolant.
  16. Start the engine and inspect for leaks.

The thermostat is located where the upper radiator hose meets the engine usually fastened by two bolts to the engine. After removing the bolts pull the hose assembly off the engine and the thermostat is inside. You will need to replace the gasket as well and maybe add some antifreeze as whats in the hose will leak out.

The water is from the thermostat housing, fairly common leak. The ticking maybe from the timing chain cassette. You may have already had the cam timing slip (the cam gears are not keyed, they are held in place by torque alone. The oil gauge sounds like an electrical problem (either sender or sender wiring).

1980 F100 with a straight 6 cyl. Won't idle.


The vacuum comes from the intake manifold and ported vacuum comes from the carb above the throttle plate. You might have a leak at the carb gasket or intake manifold gasket. Spray some car cleaner or WD40 around the gaskets and vacuum lines while the engine is running and when you hear the idle speed up, you've found the leak. You will need to install the rebuilt carb first, and you should tighten any loose intake manifold bolts. Don't overtighten them. Also check the EGR valve because it could cause the engine to stall at idle. A good tune up might be needed too. I've seen some of those engines run real rough when the ignition timing was off.

On the '02 Mountaineer, 4.0L 6 cyl, does the o-ring gasket go into the thermostat housing before or after the thermostat? Instructions I've found are vague and I cannot find a diagram of the housing...


The O-ring gets placed on top of the thermostat. Ford uses a two-piece hard plastic housing (non metal) and if you insert the O-ring before the thermostat then it will leak. That leak might cause some to over-tighten the bolts holding the housing together and leading to cracking of the housing. (The upper housing costs about $45 and lower about $65.) There is no gasket between the two housings.The thermostat is designed to allow the O-ring to fit snugly.

Changing the thermostat on this engine is very easy. It's only necessary to drain a small amount of coolant from the engine to start the repair.

1998 mustang gt coolant leak


I just had the same problem. Ford design the intake manifold with plastic water crossover which cracks. The coolant will leak onto the top of the block and and then down the back of the engine. This intake design is a known defect and was ocvered under by Ford for 7 years past the date of mfg. The crack either is in the crossover or the thermostat housing. I happed on this when I found the same leak and traced it back to the thermostat housing. I changed the thermostat, but it leaked worse. You can pickup a aftermarket for $200 and it's about 4-6 hr job to replace.
