Question about Land Rover Freelander

1 Answer

Will go in gear but car will not move

The jeep will start normally but when being selected into gears, it won't move the way it should. It just make a serious noise as if something is blocking the silencer.

Sounds like the clutch is not engaging that noise is the gears grating on each other take to a garage before you really do some internal damage

Thanks a lot for your quick response. The problem is not affecting the movement of the vehicle. The vehicle can move and the gears are working without any hassle but the movement is so slow that one will think something is holding it back. For example, the sound coming out from the vehicle is like someone who has been coughing for long and having his voice ceased somehow.

If i am on the move and have a reason to use brakes, it will slow down and by the time i want to pick back my speed, it will just be crawling so seriously that i always have to go back to gear 1 to quickly pick back the momentum. The noise it makes is also very much, not the usual sound it should. For instance, when it is being started to warm, it will give a good sound but any attempt to raise it brings this offensive sound like a burst silencer.

i still think its a clutch problem ,the pressure plate may have given out or the friction plate worn down to the rivets that would give a bad noise, but if as you say it sounds like a blown silencer it could well be a clogged catalytic converter not letting exhaust gases escape try a fuel additive specific for cat converters and run engine for a tank of fuel as you can see hard to diagnose remotely

Ok Stephen, you have been so outstanding in your response so far. I will call the mech to check the clutch as you have said. He has already checked the silencer (he even use some welding light to cut open the silencer to be sure nothing was blocking). I will communicate with him right away because he too seems not to know what else to do and that was what made me come searching for solution online. Thanks a lot and i am opened to further help and suggestions on solving it.

SOURCE: GEARBOX WONT GO INTO GEAR

hi from uk could you please give a little more info ? what make/model car ? has this problem occured suddenly? has car been layed up off road some time prior to this unable to select gears ? this problem sounds very much like the clutch drive plate is either stuck to flywheel hence question above ? or it is sticking on primary/spigot shaft for some reason and failing to disengage drive to g/box? how does clutch pedal feel ? you might try selecting 2nd gear with clutch fully pressed and h/brake on then try starting engine if engine starts ?runs then put slight revs on and slip clutch a few times this may work if plate is sticking? if you come back with update may be able to advise further

SOURCE: will go into gear but wont move

Hello ! You said belt makes a noise and it goes into gear...? I have seen this on Maximas and it was a siezed ( frozen) AC compressor...I would try to remove the belt that is attached to the air conditioning compressor and see if it runs. If it runs ok you either have to replace the compressor or match up a smaller belt and bypass it if possible. If this does not help you may need to have it looked at by a professional to diag as there are other possibilities. I hope this helps to some degree.

SOURCE: transmission

Check your rear emergency brakes. A brake shoe pin could have broke and the shoe locks up in 1 direction. but not the other. The other problem you mentioned could happen, but if it is in reverse the trans shifted.

SOURCE: 92 Accord Automatic shifting

Has anyone change the transmission fluid and used anything other than Honda ATF-Z1. If so, have the fluid/filter changed in this car and use only Honda Fluid. This is the only fluid that you can use in a Honda. Even if you have used the correct fluid an fluid/filter change may help. If that is not the case then I suggest you seek out a trusted professional.

Not all the time but when I start the car it starts very hard. When it starts hard like that and I wait a few second and put it into gear it slams into gear and sometimes won't move.

get it serviced?
hard starts are usually never getting a tuneup, (like spark plugs?)
slamming in to gear is normal if RPM is too high in park, is it.
wont move , in any gear, car wont move even in reverse.
and RPM of engine does what , sticks low, like 800 rpm
or screams at the advancement of right foot.
need lots of details. we cant drive car, but if could in 5min flat all that is clear,
eg:
transmission slips
engine weak
engine racing in park too high.
wont start and misfires when it does.
is fuel fresh, not year old.
ever get a new air filter and fuel filter. if filter is outside tank.

2004 jeep liberty won't move when put in gear (like brakes are locked).crank it in neutral put in gear it will go till i touch brakes then won't move again.WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS THING.

gear, is this a Manual trans? or AUTO you said gear.
what gear, please name the gear, 1,2,3,4,5 R
or PRNDL ( a/t box auto matic) what shift lever selection?
what is out door air temp, you do know brakes can get wet and freeze right?
it wont go you meant? until brakes are touched, key word won't?

ok engine only starts in PRNDL set to N??
is that it?
and then when you shift to D, the car will not move
what about the other gears.? try them all yet?

my guess (wild) is that you dont know how park lock out works.?
that you must hold the brake pedal down to shift to park or neutral.
is that it? (read operators guide?)

my guess is car is not drive-able. key point1 (a dead car)
point 2, engine starts and runs. and races on demand with gas foot.
point 3, im lost. (no trans stated or clear symptoms.)

my jeep has 6speed manual box
and the clutch allows me to start car.
on Automatics trans must be in park or neutral to crank engine.

"it will go till i touch brakes"

I read that 10 times,
my 2nd guess. the engine stalls ?

IS THAT IT, stalls means engine RPM is 0
and right foot actions are dead.
and all dash lamps glow, telling you STALL is now.

If cruise control is selected, it engages automatically at a certain road speed. Your description indicates that you are confused about the overdrive function.

The malfunctioning speedometer requires troubleshooting to isolate the cause.

Hi On driving a Suzuki Vitara JLX 96 P Reg

Sounds like a clutch problem to me.
So, with the engine off, can you select all gears? If yes, your gearbox is probably OK.
And now with the engine idling, can you select any gears with out crunching? If this is difficult, then try this next test in an area where movement forward or backwards won't be a problem.
With the engine OFF, foot ON the clutch, the handbrake OFF, and in 1st gear, start the car. BE READY TO TURN IT OFF.
If the car moved forward as you cranked the engine, then your clutch is not adjusted properly or has worn out. That is more-than-likely the smell you got before - burnt clutch disc from it slipping.
You can drive it, but every time you want to start off, you'll have to turn the engine off, select 1st then start the engine. Accelerate slowly, making sure the revs don't rise faster that you're speeding up, and change gear by judging engine revs between gears.
Don't keep driving it as it is, as you WILL have gearbox problems if you don't fix the clutch.
