My 2001 mercury grand marquis, when stopping at a light breaks went to the floor and the car accelerated which cause an accident.why are these cars loosing breaks and accelerating?


You have not shared what art of the country you live in, but I may be able to guess your answer.
All cars as old as yours are subject to brake failure, usually from leaking or rusted components.
A good inspection now should show you the rear brakes are bad, and perhaps the brake lines have rusted through.
Could also be a rear brake cylinder has failed, leaking out your brake fluid, and causing the brakes to give out when you needed them most.
Routine inspection probably would not have caught that, but having your brakes serviced every 7 - 10 years should have prevented it.
Lots of people do not do a complete brake service because it can get really expensive, though it would prevent your accident.
The acceleration problem is a whole different matter.

Brakes are going to floor whats the problem?


Check your brake fluid in the master cylinder.
It is usually mounted on the firewall.
If it is empty you have a leak on one of your wheels.

Rear brake rotors


Did you get brake pads and caliper off but can't get 2 bracket bolts out? These need to be heated with a propane torch to melt the locktite on the end of the threads.

Brake proportioning valve


H Colin, The brake proportioning valve adjust the amount of effort required for maximum efficiency with different loads in the vehicle. The brakes in most vehicles are proportioned for approximately 60% front brakes and forty percent rear. The valve makes small adjustments to braking between front and rear. Regards john

How do i get emerengcy brake pedal off the floor the bell wont stop and rear cable driveing vme nuts truck will drive but bell is getting to me


Many audi and vw models manufactured starting in the later '90s and continuing to present, use the bosch 5.3 abs controller, which is prone to catastrophic failure, ostensibly due to defective design. this module controls multiple brake-related functions including the abs which is important for winter driving, but the most critical function of this module is probably the electronic brake force distribution, or ebd. these vehicles are designed such that if the ebd is inoperative, the proportion of hydraulic force applied to the rear brakes during emergency braking is as great as it is during moderate braking effort when there is minimal transfer of vehicle weight to the front wheels. the ebd is supposed to adjust the front/rear braking distribution dynamically according to the measure of the deceleration, so that the rear wheels will not lock up during emergency braking. if this module should fail during emergency braking on dry pavement, the rear wheels could lock up and cause an accident which could easily include fatalities. this is an expensive repair for owners, costing roughly $2000, and many owners have probably put off the repair indefinitely. evidence which can be found through a simple web search, suggests that the problem is widespread, and that if it has not already led to serious accidents, it is only a question of time. this problem is genuine, and vw/audi should be compelled to take immediate corrective action.

Replaced rear drum brakes on 98 chevy cheyenne k1500 and brakes worked fine but e brake seemed way too tight, i didnt want to even try but my father in-law said aww its suppose to be that way so he pressed...


check the cable, if its corroded, rusted, the spring in the drum isnt strong enough to pull the cable back, to release the brake. You may need a new cable for the drivers side.

ABS light and Trac Cont light stay on....


Check your rear brakes and inside the rear Rotors. There are ABS scanners and if Autozone or Oreillys have that type of scanner, they will scan for free.

Because the Trac Control is on the Rear axle all of your problems are probably rearward. What usually happens is the Emergency brake material and the Rotor pads wear down and blind the sensors. Sometimes the Trac Control will destroy the brake linings. The Trac Control works by applying the rear brake to the fastest spinning wheel in an effort to match each rear wheels speed.

When the sensors have debris flying in front of them, they miscount and include the debris in figuring RPM. Someone needs to disassemble and inspect the back brakes.

How do you change rear brakes? There are rear brake drums and i cant get them off, are they rusted on or is there a trick to getting them off?


mcdevito75, The rear drums are on very tight, the time and effort to get them off, really isn"t worth it, and even if you do the remaining brakes could just fall apart. Let your local repair shop handle this job.

Constant replacement of rear rotors


first i would the car to a professional auto repair shop and have the brakes evaluated. you may have to pay a small fee, but it will pay for itself in the long run. it sounds like the rear calipers are sticking or dragging, or the parking brake is also dragging. the rear calipers are actuated, they stop the car in normal braking and they also are used when the parking brake is applied, the caliper piston will move out and keep the car from rolling when the parking brake is applied. worst case senerio you may need to replace the rear calipers, caliper brackets, rear brake hoses and both rear rotors, unless they can be resurfaced. the vibration or pulsation is more than likely excessive runout or thickness variation in these rotors from the calipers dragging (not releasing). also if the car takes too much effort to stop and you have had to replace these rotors 4 times, that is not normal. have a repair shop check to see if the brake fluid is contaminated. a good and quick sign to check for contamination is if the rubber under the brake fluid cap is distorted.please do not drive this vehicle until it is checked out by a professional auto repair shop. thanks

Brake cylinder


It has been over 10 yrs. since I worked on brakes. The new style requires a brake reset tool ( or the use of needle nose pliers). I got the answer on the interent (don't try to force the caliper as it might damage the brake system)and by calling O'Riely auto.
