What Year ? The engine turns over but won't start ? Is this the problem SECURITY light lit or flashing ? If SECURITY light is on the PCM/ECM - engine computer disables the fuel injectors ,so it won't start . If the SECURITY light is on there is codes stored in the PCM/ECM or the theft deterrent module . Your husband messed with something he shouldn't have .
You don't need to program key's with this anti-theft system , there is no chip inside . Did you get a correct lock cylinder. . On this system there is a pass lock sensor in side an the lock clinder has a magnet !
The passlock™ sensor is inside the upper right side of the steering column. The passlock™ sensor contains 2 hall effect sensors. The tamper hall effect sensor is on the top. The security hall effect sensor is under the tamper hall effect sensor. Both of the hall effect sensors monitor the magnet of the lock cylinder through an opening. The tamper hall effect sensor is physically placed on top of the security hall effect sensor. This arrangement enables the tamper hall effect sensor to engage first if an intruder attempts to bypass the passlock™ sensor by placing a large magnet around that area of the steering column. There is a tamper resistor inside the passlock™ sensor in order to help prevent tamper to the system. Passlock™ equipped vehicles have a selection of 10 different security resistors ranging from 0.5K ohms up to 13.6K ohms. Installing one of the security resistors inside the passlock™ sensor will generate a unique passlock™ code. All 10 combinations of the passlock™ sensor have the same part number. However, you cannot simply replace the passlock™ sensor and expect the system to operate properly. Always start by performing the Diagnostic System Check first and following the instructions.
Body Control Module
The Body Control Module (BCM) contains the theft deterrent system logic. The BCM reads the passlock™ data from the passlock™ sensor. If the passlock™ data is correct, the BCM will pass theft. The BCM will then transmit the code password to the VCM/PCM.
During the tamper mode the vehicle may start. The vehicle will then stall. If the BCM receives the wrong passlock™ data, the VTD will immediately go into the tamper mode. The tamper mode will lock-out the vehicle fuel injectors for 10 minutes. The SECURITY indicator will flash while the VTD is in the tamper mode.
If the passlock™ sensor sends a correct password to the BCM when the ignition is in the ON position, the BCM will send a fuel enable signal to the VCM/PCM. The VCM/PCM will not disable the fuel due to any BCM message for the remainder of the ignition cycle.
You only need to do a relearn if one of these are replaced

30 Minute Re-Learn Procedure
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
Repeat steps 1 through 4 two more times for a total of 3 cycles/30 minutes ( the vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK).
Important: The vehicle learns the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
Start the engine (the vehicle has now learned the Passlock™ Sensor Data Code and/or password).
With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if desired (history DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles).
The security system need to be reset, plug your charger back on the battery then turn the ignition switch on and leave it on untill the security warning light turns off (about 10 to 20 Min) then turn the key to off wait 5sec then turn the car on it should be good to go, this solves this kind of problem 9 out of 10. good luck
Your description is a bit misleading. Is the starter spinning or is it just making a clunking sound when the key is turned to the start position? If the starter is spinning and the engine isn't, you have a bad starter drive or there are teeth missing on the flywheel (or flex plate if you have an automatic transmission).
You have now experienced GM's terrible anti theft security system. These systems are known for failing and will cost you an arm and a leg to fix. Anywhere from $350 - $700 plus labor. Most mechanics wont even touch these "PASSkey" security systems.You'll have to go to a Dealer mechanic. The good news is that you can bypass these systems permanently. And you're vehicle is one of these lucky ones that CAN be bypassed. This link should help you find what you need and help inform you of how this system works.
does the starter motor turn? the security light is an indicator of tamper mode. in tamper mode you will not able to start the vehicle until you reset the Passlock system by leaving the key in the ON position for 10-20 minutes.
tamper mode is a result of an unauthorized engine start attempt (such as a "hotwire") or a malfunction in the ignition cylinder.
Your problem is either the Alternator isent charging its 13.5 volts and the battery is flat or wont hold the charge SO do this.
Jump start engine again let it run for 2 minutes then turn on lights,, the head lights should go bright at 13.5 volts. it engine cuts out..and the lights dont go bright,, then the Alternator is not charging,,,, If they go bright and still cuts out the batterys NO GOOD.
Replace battery or get it checked outit must hold 12volts all the time Let me know how you get on.
Sounds like your Passlock security system went into the tamper mode. If your dashboard security light blinks when the ignition is turned on, your Passlock security system is disabling the injector module, preventing the car from start. Try this: 1- turn the ignition on and just touch the starter, without getting the motor to fire, then leave the ignition in the "on" position. The security light will blink for about 10 minutes. When the light stops blinking, turn the ignition off and leave off for 3 minutes. 2-repeat the step #1, 3 or 4 times. You will know that is fixed when you turn the ignition on and the security light does not blink, then the car will start. Make sure to stay inside the car when you're doing this, as opening the doors will trip the security tamper mode on again. Once the tamper mode is off, the car starts and opening the doors will not trip the Passlock tamper mode.
