Question about 1996 BMW 328i

Engine is bugging out as if its shutting off half the engine!

I just did a auto to manual conversion on my bmw e36 and after high/hard acceleration my engine bogs out as if its misfiring also my rpms show at 2k when the engine is completely calm i turn the car off and back and it runs fun until you wanna have fun it give it full throttle please help!

SOURCE: check engine light

I had the same problem and it turned out that we had a crack in our fuel tank (or something related to the tank) which caused fumes to come out (nothing serious) but enough to have the light come on and NOT pass emmissions inspection in Atlanta GA. I love my 328i BUT.....it only has 110k miles and have spent over $5k in the past 12 months on this plus the entire cooling system which went out 1 component at a time. If your cooling system has not gone out....start saving!

SOURCE: Car hesitates/stalls when engine is warm and car starts to move.

Sounds like a bad motor mount, pop the hood and see if the motor shakes or moves rapidly when u put it in gear holding down the brake.

SOURCE: engine speed will not rev over 4000rpm

Sounds like a fuel filter issue. If the filter is clogged or is getting to the point where it's going to be clogged badly the amount of fuel going to the engine will be restricted. This would cause your stated problem. Theoretically there isn't much of a need to go over 4000 rpm unless you are racing with the car but I think most bimmer owners can understand where you are coming from:) As far as the 1993, I'd check all your intake piping and vacuum lines and make sure there are no leaks whatsoever. An easy way to check is to have the car running and spray carb cleaner on the intake piping and such and see if your revs increase, if they do you've got a leak. Hope this helps! SOURCE: HOW COULD I READ CHECK ENGINE CODE ON A 1986 BMW 325E???

You can't use a tool to pull codes from an '87 BMW 325(e). You have the 2.7 liter and your DME, or computer is a Motronic. If you had a 325i, then a tool could read the codes because the computer was upgraded that year to a Motronic 1.1 system with a round plug in under the screw cap on the driver's side under the hood. The only tool you can buy is the one for resetting the service interval light and resetting the oil change light. To answer your question about going about finding your driveability problem would be to get a BMW Bentley Manual. This manual shows you how to use a standard voltmeter to check everything from your computer plug in. Your computer is located above the glovebox.

The battery could still be bad and if you don't have a totally good battery in the car it won't run right. Take to one of the parts stores and they can check it for you for free. Probably as simple as a battery.

My bmw e36 sunroof wont open. the sunroof motor has got power


If your e36 has tilt option,PRESS AND HOLD TILT
Watch sunroof when it tilts wait untill it lifts a further half inch
This will happen in about 30/45 seconds
Providing you have no problems,this will reset

This is a common defect in E36 series and personally I also had it on my BMW E36! It is a flawed instrument panel and must be exchanged for another and recoded in to diagnosis tool

Heya, i got a E36 320i auto coupe. its not overheating standing, but its red hot after driving it a mile


this sounds like a water blockage, take off the water hose that goes to the engine block, start the engine, and see if there is water flow going to engine...if this is the problem, then you need to buy an engine flush fluid, and flush out your engine....please be carefull, as the E36 320i, has an aluminium head, and is easily warped by heat

Engine cuts out

A few things to check.
  1. Is fuel pump delivering enough fuel.
  2. Is injectors clean. Perhaps dirt in fuel. replace fuel filter
  3. Air leakage at top air intake of manifold at ICV idle control valve. Two hoses inside this housing prone to perishing.
  4. Throttle position sensor faulty.
  5. Mass air flow sensor faulty.
  6. ICV faulty or dirty. comon fault on older e36.
Havent done it yet but ICV is easy to clean according to internet. instruction available at bmw e36 blog. All off above can be tested by yourself according to manual.

1997 328 i convertable the engine lite just went on just bought


When the "Check Engine" light comes on in the 1997 BMW 328iC, the problem is 99% Emissions Systems. First thing to check are the Four (4) Oxygen Sensors. That is correct your convertible has four O2 sensors. They are about $100 to $118 each, online.

I have done this procedure it is not a big deal. It just requires four sensors. More than likely you and your car experience one or several of the following:
  • Engine will not accelerate and backfires
  • Check Engine light is illuminated
  • Irregular idle during warm-up
  • Irregular idle with warm engine
  • Poor engine performance
  • Fuel consumption is high
  • Driving performance is weak
The O2 sensors reduce emissions and tells the computer how to mix your gasoline to air mixture going into your engine.

Since you say you have a 328, they have either two or four O2 sensors. The 1997 BMW 328 Convertible has four. Your chassis style is also referred to as a E36 series. Your engine is a 6 cyl M52.

BMW SERVICE RESET Take a small wire, paperclip, or elect wire and bend like a horseshoe. No light or equipment necessary Open the diagnostic data port, the one were the little pacman centre is located. Turn the ignition to position 2, don?t start. Connect pin7 always first and then pin 19. Hold for 4 seconds. Remove wire and settings will be reset. Warning if you hold the wire longer than 10 seconds you may reset inspection intervals 1 and 2. I?ve done this twice and it definitely work on my E36
