I would remove the water pump./ Disassemble / Remove Bearing / Get Bearing number / Buy a new Bearing from a local Bearing supply house / Re Install. You can get a water pump gasket for $10.50 from E-Bay . Best way to go.

Timimg belts usually don't make noise, they break and the motor stops!! The noise could be coming from a bad water pump, powersteering pump, air compresser, alternater, leaky exhaust, leaky vacume lines. Check them out. Or, I don't know the condition of the engin. Has it been neglected and are the bearing going? More history would be helpful.

It may say C0D3 or something similar.
Assuming that the radio is original to the car, collect your VIN and fill out the Volvo's customer service form. You should have an answer in a business day or two.

I have 86,000 miles on my 1993 240 Classic. What is the maintenance schedule and what should be done at this time?

Most car dealers recommend maintenance services at 30K, 60K, 90K and so on. The 30K service is mainly focused in inspection of the systems and replace of the fuel filter.
The 60K is expensive for cars with timing belt. The coolant, transmission oil and filter, and the brake fluid has to be changed. The air filter and spark plugs has to be replaced at this time too.
Most costly is the replacement of the timing belt. Volvo recommends for Volvo 240, changing the timing belt every 50,000 miles. Needless to say, they are pretty religious about this now.
The B20, B21, B23, and B230 engines are non-interference engines, meaning that the camshaft can be rotated independently of the crankshaft and no damage will result to the engine. That is, if the timing belt breaks, the valves will not hit the pistons; the engine will simply stop.
On the other hand, the B234 16-valve engines and any of the other Volvo multi valve engines are interference engines. Loss of the timing belt in these engines will result in severe or fatal engine damage.

My 1992 volvo 240 wouldn't start until after several tries, then today it kept stalling at stop lights. Took it to a garage and they said the engine mounts were broken and fan belts needed replacing, but...

These models have a control module on the right front fender which had problems with the connections. Have someone crank the engine while you wiggle the harness. If starting comes and goes, Volvo sells the repair kit for this. Let me know if you need further assistance.

Unplug your air flow sensor and see if it starts. If it does you will have to replace the sensor.

1992 Volvo 240 GL = shift problems

It sounds like linkage to me as well - jack car block to prevent fall and block tire - do on flat ground and track cable under car. I think you should start under hood where linkage joins transmission. I seem to recall a plate there to hold at this end . not that it is a yoke type movement in transmission. this must be always lubricated. Did you ever have car jump out of gear? was it ever stiff to shift and has car been sitting?
