Alternator removal

Hi Mike, disconnect the battery and then disconnect the plug from the socket at the rear of the alternator and then the battery feeder cable. Loosen the lock nut which is fitted at a ninety degree angle to the adjuster on the top flange. Loosen the adjuster and then the through bolt underneath the alternator. The alternator is now ready to be lifted out. Regards John

When replacing my alternator, what do I have to take off to get to it? I can not get it from the top nor bottom.

FROM underneath the van: Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery. If you can remove the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold, it's easiest to take it out from underneath. There is a support brace that goes from the power steering pump bracket to the engine block. Remove it, then remove the upper and lower alternator mounting bolts. Disconnect the electrical connections, and lower the alternator to the ground. If you can't break the exhaust pipe bolts free...this won't work.

The car is shutting off after starting then draining the battery. I have tested the battery and it is still good. Is this an alternator problem or something else?

Yes, the majority of vehicles can be started and then the battery completely removed from the vehicle and continue to run. If your Jeep dies and then wont restart (or is hesitant) because of a dead battery, this would most likely be the alternator connections, or event he alternator itself. Obviously the alternator is not supplying current to the vehicle. Most autopart stores can check the alternator for you, often free of charge and the easiest placed to start.

How to remove the alternator

On a 2004 GMC Envoy xl v6, the alternator has 3 mounting bolts, 2 on top, 1 on bottom. best advice is to disconnect the electrical circuits to the alternator first before removing the mounting bolts. then take off the bottom bolt, followed by the 2 on top. then just slide it out and your done.

Can't remove the alternator! How do you remove the alternator on a Ford Focus 2001 without unbolt the engine mount?

The other option, but be warned could cause damage to the motor mounts, is to use a cherry picker to lift the engine up enough to clear the alternator from the engine bay.

Where is the coolant temperature sensor on a 2004 dodge ram

It is behind the alternator. If you disconnect the top alternator bolt and then the lead to the alternator, and loosen the bottom bolt, you can swing the alternator towards the passenger side and see the sensor. You obviously have to remove the serpentine belt to move the alternator.

Easiest way to get the alternator out of a '97 3000 gt sohc?

Manual says to remove the radiator but if you remove the bolts holding the radiator and push it out of the way it is possible to remove the alternator through the top but it takes some work to wiggle it out.
