Viewing wiring diagrams an testing the electrical system is the way to find the problem . Do you know what a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter Is ?
Free wiring diagrams here http://www.bbbind.com/free-tsb Enter vehicle info. Year , make , model an engine size. Under system click on engine , then under subsystem click on starting . Click the search button ,then the blue link. Starter Voltage Drop
Did you have it programmed into the vehicle , is it a anti-theft key ? Does your vehicle has anti-theft system light on top of the dash panel ? A little red light flashing when trying to start the vehicle ? Need to have a mobile lock smith program it or take it to the dealer
What make model an year vehicle ? Starter relay could be bad starter motor could be bad ? You have to test the electrical circuit ! Find A wiring diagram for the starting circuit of your vehicle at http://www.bbbind.com/free_tsb.html . Do you own a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter or a test light . Depending on the year of your vehicle it may or may not have a relay . Go on youtube an check out videos on testing relays , basic automotive electrical trouble shooting , voltage drop testing , how to read a wiring diagram . What are you using to jump start the vehicle ? When disconnecting what ever your using to jump start the vehicle , does the vehicle die right away ?
Sounds like anti-theft system problem ! There is a little red light center top of dash pad , When you try to start the vehicle does the light flash fast ? If the vehicle thinks it's being stolen it won't let truck crank over an it turns off the fuel injectors !
If the anti theft light is blinking and you say that everything else fine.. My first thought is that the key is not programmed to the vehicle. The key has a internal chip that must be programmed to vehicle in order to start. Now my other question is, Is the key your using for the vehicle the original key or have you just recently had a key made? Regardless, in order for the yur Tribute to start, the key. Or keys have to be program to vehicle by your neighbor dealership. Thats the reason for your anti theft light is blinking
No idea without a play under the bonnet but try charging the battery up so it starts on its own then see how it runs, a low voltage will cause the symptoms you describe
This is a VERY common problem in GM vehicles. There is an anti theft security system installed in your car. When there is a communication break in this system, the computer switches off the starter thinking that somebody is trying to steal the car. Is there a light that says SECURITY on the dash when you turn the key forward 2 clicks? If you see this light at all, this is most likely your problem.
