Starter solenoid , or wire that leads to it.

Also , if standard transmission , may be the switch on clutch pedal is intermitant.

Engine won't turn over unless it thinks you have your foot on the clutch.

did you change your battery or have a load test performed on it,it could be bad.
Have your mechanic change the wire harness for the alternator at the plug, they can burn out on the inside and look good on the outside,They are black 10 guage with orange stripe, and smaller guage plug wires. This part canbe purchased from the parts store, or dealer.

1999 Pontiac Sunfire 5 speed won't start. Replaced spark plugs and checked ignition coil (fine). Sounds like it wants to turn over but makes a "whining" noise. Please assist. Thank you!

Is the engine turning over with the key in the start position? If the engine is not spinning over and you hear a whining noise, the starter is not engaging the flywheel. If the engine is turning over with the starter engaged, the engine has most likely jumped time that creates low or no compression which results in the whining noise.

Why would battery power to my ignition switch come and go?

Bad connections at battery? Side post battery terminals are very prone to corrsion and poor connections. Other possibilities are weak/frayed fusible link, bad ignition switch.

Lights on dash work new battery and starter and maxi fuse replaced still won't start

do you have fuel pressure, quick check is to have someone turn the ignition key on while you listen closely to the fuel tank. You should hear a whining sound for about 2 seconds. if you don't the fuel pump is not working.

Circuit breaker

Check you fusible links and circuit breakers. Not sure how you put the alternator on but you must disconnect the battery while hooking up the alternator. If you connected it wrong or arced it against something then its possible you popped a fusible link. Use a test light and test on both sides of your fusible links. Try that and see if it helps.

Sounds like it could be a bad ignition switch-the electrical part, not the lock cylinder. When key is in the on position (run), those fuses should be powered. Are all the maxi-fuses good? They distribute power throughout the car's electrical circuits-like the fuse panel, for instance, so check the maxi-fuses. If good, probably the ignition switch is bad.

Try turning the key to the on position three times, then leave it on the third time and wait about fifteen minutes for the security light to stop flashing. then turn the key off and try to start it.
