we now have replaced the fuel filter, seems to have more power but still bogs down and is hard to get speed up. i have to slowly get speed up and seems to not want to change gears ib transmission. everyone is now telling me it is probably the cataylic converter, which is more than i can afford at this time especially if that isnt what is wrong.

I have a 97 jimmy and it does good till your up to speed (anything over 50) it starts to studder when gas is evened out (not gaining or losing) but fine when you give it more gas or let off

If the check engine light is on, you should check for trouble codes first.
The first thing that comes to mind is the EGR valve. It could be opening when it should not.
Another thing is a regular cylinder miss. The transmission is going into overdrive at 45-50 mph which puts extra load on the engine. If you speed up it downshifts into 3rd which gives the engine more power. A regular miss could be ignition or a fuel injector.

NO codes, plugs, wires, exhaust, 02 sensor and egr functional tests, sensors seem to work fine according to scanner, checked injector balance, fuel pressure, replaced fuel filter, checked coil resistance,...

you said some thing about exhaust. Was it replaced? was the catalytic converter replaced with it? What was the 02 sensors doing when the car was running. Were they switching numbers at the same rate or was the back switching slower than the front. What engine size.

Engine light came on in my dodge caravan sxt 3.3L 6cyl. Code P0404. It seems to be running fine, how do I check the EGR valve myself? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

To check the egr yourself you will need a hand held vacuum pump. To perform the test start the van and let it warm-up, then remove the top vacuum hose from egr valve and attach hand vacuum pump to egr valve. Apply about 5 in-hg vacuum to the egr valve. With the engine at idle speed and vacuum applyed the engine idle speed will drop or stall. If not then the egr valve is faulty and will need to be replaced. If the engine didi change idle speed and or stalled the egr valve is good. Hope this will help you.

POWER !

check your transmission fluid levels they may be low, and replace the spark plugs you know give it a good tune up! wires, air filter, fluids, clean throttle body, IAC sensor, check for Vacuum leaks; like cracked hoses that lead to your map sensor or EGR valve etc.
