Question about 2002 Dodge Stratus
Its stuck in 3rd gear limp mode. code reader said replace speed sensors and the speedometer was saying I was going 20 miles faster than i really was, so I replaced both and now the speedometer doesn't work at all and still in limp mode, but I can down shift, where as before I couldnt down shift, I swapped back sensors and it speedometer went back to being 20 mph above what I was going. IE 60 mph says 80ish. So I know I didn't damage the wires. The other code is p0401 exhaust gas recirculation flow insufficent detected, but I don't think that would throw the transmission into limp mode? I have older vehicles that have had that code and they drive fine.

Check the wire harness, make sure there are no breaks or crushed wires. Also check the wire harness to the TCM, look for any loose connections. Good luck and keep me posted. Be glad to help.

Although you didn't mention it, the speedometer probably bounces also. Replacing the speed sensor on the side of the transmission should solve both your problems. Good luck

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

Change your speedometer sensors, one might be bad, but change both to be sure, then reset computer. To get transmission out of safe mode. Check and be sure your transmission fluid is ok while car is running and on flat ground. If low be sure to use right fluid, wrong fluid can cost you a transmission
