I had the problem with my 2000 Kia Sportage. The only solution I could find was to replace the fan clutch. The temperature then read normal.

SOURCE: 2002 kia sportage temp gauge runs hot while driving

Cheak to see that the coolant fan is operating with the A/C turned on. The fan has to work to help the engine stay cool and help the A/C. When you apply heat on the control it acts to reduce the coolant temp. You will have to get the coolant fan operation checked. This can be :fan motor, fan relay, temp sensor and computer. Good luck

Dont tear it apart just yet.

Is it boiling over?

I have had a similar problem with my dodge. I dont think that your engine is getting as hot as you think, unless it is boiling over. It is probably your gauge. typical dodge. Dont get me wrong I love my dodge. If its not that then maybe the sending unit. One more thing, take it down to your local muffler shop and have the catalitic converter tested. If it is pluged it will cause it to over heat in just a few minutes.

Good luck

1995 oldsmobile cutless supreme gauge go to hot radiator thermostat and water pump chaned

Check that the temp sender wire is not shorting out on the engine as that will make the gauge read hot. Replace the sender unit as they can change resistance over time and read wrong.

Radiator fan not stop running

Check the radiator fan relay operation. These are known to sometimes fuse in the closed circuit position and fail to shut off the circuit.
Another thing to check is the change in resistance of the thermistor which controls the fan circuit. You can try using a ohms meter on the thermistor and drop it into hot then cold water and check out your reading. You are looking for a dramatic change in resistance. If you can even compare this reading to a new thermistor, then you will have an even more accurate example of what that resistance should be.

Hi: I read your answer to the problem with the 1999 Mercury Mistique temperature gauge. I'm having a similar problem. My temperature gauge is broken in the cold position. And, as far as I can tell,...

Very correct the ECT is a 2 wire thermistor, when coolant temp increases, the resistance andsignal voltage decrease,If you disconnect the sensor the fan goes on, you just trouble shooted the vehicle cooling fan switch, If anything the signal to the gauge itself may be non-op and not getting to the indicator, try this with vehicle at warm up temperature if you turn the A/C does the fan turn should if it doesnt the power juction box (fuse and relay in engine compartment should be checked, for any opeen fuses, By the way the guage information is from the PCM
