Question about 1998 Land Rover Discovery
Speedometer, odometer and tripometer do not work how can I determine if it is the speed sensor in the transfer case or the dash instrument cluster?
First check the fuse - your driver's manual will tell you which one. Most likely, a blown fuse is the cause of the problem

Boy have I changed a bunch of these. The vehicle speed sensor is located on the tailshaft of the transfer case near where the rear driveshaft is connected. Easy replacement. Clear the code and test drive.

SOURCE: Speedometer stopped working
pretty common for the cable to break,if you get under the vehicle disconnect it from the gearbox and tug the inner cable it should not come out...if it does you know the problem....if it doesnt put a battery drill on the cable....dont start the engine but leave the ignition on a spin the drill if your speedo dont work then you need a new speedo head.....but that is very uncommon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No need for a diagram, to drain the oil, there's a drain plug on the bottom of the transfer box, under the handbrake drum. To fill, the fill plug is about in line with the centre of the handbrake drum and to the left. I think both plugs are 1/2" square. Fill to overflow with Texaco Multi-Gear 75W/90R. Takes about 2L or so.
