Question about Ford Ranger

1 Answer

2000 3.0 Flex Fuel Ford Ranger. Whenever I run E85 in the truck, the CEL comes on and reports PO171 and PO174, lean on banks 1 and 2. If I run all the E85 out, fill up with regular 87 octane, clear codes, the CEL and codes do not come back. I have taken it to a mechanic and they checked for vac leaks, didn't find any. They changed the spark plugs, filled up with E85, CEL back on.

Best answer here is that the sensors are not set for the poor quality fuel ( the octane ratine is probably to low for the ECM to properly maintain the air /fuel mixture ) you have the answer to your problem when you change back to quality fuel and it runs right. As a point of interest most small engines will not run right on e fuel mixes.

Testimonial: "Huh? It is a flex fuel vehicle and is designed to run on E85. I had run it on E85 with no issues before this started popping up."

I have a 2000 model expedition and the codes po174 and po171 are popping up, along with po301 and po306 showing misfire. How can I fix that?

P0174/0171 are bank 1-2 running lean (insufficient fuel) which is related to the misfire codes. When there is a misfire detected, the computer shuts fuel to those cylinders triggering "too lean" codes. These vehicles are known for ignition coil failures. I'd recommend you replace all ignition coils (qty of 8) as they do have a short life span. Replace with another brand (not motorcraft/Ford), such as MSD/Accell/BOSH etc. hopefully this helpd!!

2003 Ford Ranger 4x4 extended cab- diagnostics checked and got these codes- P0171, P0174, P0300, P0316. Can you tell me what they mean?

P0171------ system too lean bank#1
Po174------ system too lean bank#2
For these 2 codes, try cleaning the maf sensor (mass air flow), that is mounted in the big black hose that goes from the air filter housing to the throttle plate, if it is dirty, that will cause those 02 sensors to send a signal to the computor to lean the air fuel mixture. If cleaning it doesn't work, the sensors will probably need changing.
P0300---- Random/multiple cylinder misfire
P0316---- Cylinder misfire at start up---- first 100 revolutions.
On those 2 codes, you have to do some testing to find out why there is a misfire.
Possible causes:
dirty/malfunctioning injectors
weak coil pack
fowling spark plugs/wires
Low fuel pressure

What do these trouble codes mean p0171 and p0174

po171 is system too lean, bank 1,po174,is system too lean, bank 2,It sounds like a fuel pressure problem.

Code po171 7 po174

your computer is reporting bank 1 and 2 too lean, usually caused by the mass air flow (MAF) sensor, you can usually clean this sensor and reset the light. Clean it with electric cleaner or brake cleaner, make sure it is dry before reinstalling, also take care not to damage it. Hope this helps, let me know

1995 Windstar OBD II showing codes PO340, PO171, and PO174

Hello;
With those codes, the first place I would check is the fuel pressure. Also check the fuel filter and replace it if you haven't already. Then clear codes and recheck. Even if your fuel pressure is with in range it still may not push enough fuel to operate your vehicle.
