Had stopped car on a backwards recline sat for about 3 mins everything was fine after that I drove the car for about 10 mins when all of a sudden the alarm stared and my fuel gauge dropped to empty, with a message saying fuel gauge error contact dealer, I had about half a tank of petrol when this happened and luckily I have still been able to start and drive it, but gauge has not come back up , i have read some peoples will not start after this happens or will completely stop in the middle of traffic.

It varies for every car. Usually 1-1.5 gallons when the low fuel light comes on. I drove my last '93 Ford Taurus around until the gauge said it was empty. Lifted the car and took the gas tank off and it had 3 or more gallons still in it. Here's some fun, zero your odometer, fill the gas tank and drive it until the low fuel light comes on. Then drive it till it dies out, obviously somewhere near home or where someone can drop off a full gas can.
i think you have mis understood the garage ,oil on leads will not help the car run right either as it will short them out .But you have to watch some shady pratices from dealers who like to milk the golden cow,by saying that before they can rectify one thing they have to rebuild the car .But yes a leaky rocker cover gasket could stop the car if the plug leads were wet enough with oil.
