SOURCE: rear scraping sound, Also when placed on lift and in gear (all wheel drive) the rear left wheel does not spin

Take it in for proper diagnosis - that's not supposed to happen in an 'ALL WHEEL DRIVE' - all WHEELS ARE SUPPOSED TO TURN.

not work, do tell what makes you think it dont work (a lamp) or tires slipping or dead tires. (by tires mean that and traction)??????????

first off, we dont know what your tires are touching.

on road, or off road. pavement or ICE or snow.

that matters big time . (you read manual and match MODE to Road)

In 4A mode the center differential is electronically-controlled and rear drive wheel bias. The on-board computer monitors for any sign of rear drive wheel slip (loss of traction)

If loss of traction is detected, the center differential is told to send a share of the engine\'s torque to the front drive wheels. It will not let the front driveshaft turn at the same speed as the rear driveshaft.



What about traction management?

1997-2002 model Ford Expeditions offered an optional limited-slip rear differential (LSD). A conventional open rear differential was standard along with the conventional open front differential and the electronic locking center differential.

comment with out LSD, one tire can spin, on say ice.

The reason is, you have a rear anti lock brake system. The anti lock valve is located on the frame just underneath the brake master. It is called a RABS valve. Almost impossible to bleed. But it can be done. A dealer has a tool that plugs into the RABS valve which activates the valve constantly moving the valve back and forth. This will then push all fluid and air out of your open bleeder screws in the rear.
I did'nt go to the dealer. i was too stubborn. My solution was to lift the rear of the truck and place on jack stands. Pinch off the rubber brake hoses on the 2 front brakes with a C-clamp or non marring vise grips, this will keep all fluid from going to front brakes. Next adjust the rear brake shoes by tightening the adjuster on the rear brake drums. Tighten the brakes on the rear until the brakes start to drag and the tires no longer spin freely by hand. Attach a bleeder hose to the bleeder screw on the RABS valve, place open end of hose into a jar or canister of brake fluid, so as not to draw in any air. Open the bleeder screw. Start the vehicle up, put it in gear, and let the rear tires spin. (I got up to 25mph on my speedometer) Step on the brake while it is in gear and the tires are spinning. This will activate the RABS valve and cause the air in the RABS valve to bleed. Do this several times. Put vehicle in park, shut off engine, and close the bleeder on the RABS valve. Attach bleeder hose to right rear of the truck, place open end of hose in a canister or jar of brake fluid so no air gets in and open the bleeder screw. Start the vehicle up, put it in gear, and let the rear wheels spin freely. As the wheels spin, you press your foot on the brake pedal, this will activate the RABS valve, and effectively bleed the brakes. Do this a dozen or so times, tighten the bleeder screw and do the other side. Remove clamps from front brake hoses and you will be go to go. All this may seem a bit extreme, but it is the only effective way to bleed a Rear Anti Lock Brake System on an early Ford. All the steps I laid out are necessary. You cannot skip one. The reason why the rear has to be in the air, is that there is a sensor mounted to the rear differential that senses wheel spin(or axle spin), this goes directly to the RABS valve and tells it that the tires are moving at a certain speed, and to activate the Rear Anti Lock Brakes when the brake pedal is depressed. It will not activate if it does not sense movement. The reason for pinching off the front brake lines, is that there are needle valves in the master cylinder and they will send too much fluid to the front calipers, and stifle or hinder the amount of fluid needed to go to the rabs valve and ultimately the rear wheel cylinders. It seems like a lot, and it is, but I did it and it works. Good luck

Why is it that when i put my truck in four wheel drive it only turns one wheel up front and one in the rear? This is on my Ford F150 4x4 1989


The gears in the axels are open type - meaning they drive the wheel with the least amount of traction, most often right rear and left front wheels. Some of the rear axels were fitted with a limited slip type that would drive both wheels.

Removal
  1. Raise vehicle and place jackstands under rear frame crossmember. Lower the hoist so that rear axle housing is at suitable working height.
  1. Remove axle housing cover from rear axle housing and drain lubricant.
  1. Perform the inspection before disassembly.
  1. Remove rear wheels, rear disc brake calipers and rear disc brake rotors.
  2. Working through cover opening, remove differential pinion shaft lock pin and remove differential pinion shaft and differential pinion gears (4215). 3fdbe2c.gif
NOTE: THIS IS FREE INFORMATION!!!!
  1. Remove rear brake anti-lock sensor . Push axle shaft inward until u-washers at button end of the axle shaft are clear of side gear recess.
  1. stb~us~en~file=ani_caut.gif~gen~ref.gif CAUTION: Do not damage inner wheel bearing oil seals when removing axle shafts from rear axle housing. In addition, axle shafts should be completely removed from rear axle housing.

Gear box


Hi Steve, without knowing a bit more about your disco, ie, age, 200 or 300tdi, can you get all the gears when in 4x4 ?,it might be difficult to pinpoint your fault, but going on your first description i would say that the high range on your transfer box could be the problem. Do you have a local transmission repair workshop to you?, they should be able to confirm this for you

Lost rear traction on 03 Impreza AWD


I have the same car. Mine is automatic. What is yours?

Possible scenarios:

1/ Is the FWD on the dash panel lit up? This will tell you that only the front wheels are engaged without power to the rear wheels. The manual tells you if you have a flat tire in your car, you have to make it into a FWD by inserting a fuse in your fuse box. Check and see if the circuitry isn't shorting out your awd which is making it fwd.

2/ Because the car has open diffs in the front and rear axles, you (or your friend) might see only the front wheels spinning and not the rear wheels. The power is transfered to the wheel with lowest resistance. With the front wheel spinning, one of the rear wheel(s) should also spin. Might not be a solution but maybe you can't see the rear spinning wheel because it's spinning on the other side.

96 pontiac trans am


i have a 1996 trans am.i just replaced the optispark distributor cap and rotor,it starts fine,but when i drive for a bit stop the car,then try to restart,then it wont go,but if i leave it for a while it starts up fine again,now i am getting black smoke from my exhaust,any help or suggestions
