The car is a ford territory 2004 ghia. I have done all the tests for battery and starter motor with multimeter and results appear normal. Was thinking it maybe the ignition switch or could the crankshaft sensor be an issue? Any suggestions or should I wait till it turns over and take it to an auto electrician? Thing is, they will repeat the tests I did because I know this is the process of elimination. Maybe someone has encountered this problem and can assist me with suggestions before I bite the bullet?
Starter motors can appear to be normal re electrical testing but internally is where the orob lies ,have you had the OBD read ? when it doesnt start does it turn over and not fire up or not turn over or very sluggish at best ?

these vehicles have a lot of problems with ignition cylinders binding up. It needs to be replaced with an updated cylinder. If you tap on the key with a small hammer or something like it while turning the key you can get it to turn

Is there any sound when the key is turned? The solenoid may be stuck, and a light tap with a hammer may free it up. The starter is located on the engine block.

I have the same car but don't have that problem with this one however, I did with the 99 I traded for this one. I figured out that if the wheels were not left straight, any degree of angle facing either direction, would freeze something in the steering column and not allow it to start. Had it towed twice before the tech said he had the same problem in the past. Never happened after that. The prob I had with the 2004 Taurus, bought a cheap battery from wal-mart and it ran everything but my car, tech said it's probably the reason the alternator had failed. Check your brand of battery. My battery light stayed on for two months, started fine, switched the battery from the wal-mart one, light went off instantly.

I had the same problem with mine and intended up being the starter motor. Sometimes it would start and then just cut out.

the obd is a computer that stores codes relating to problems to vehicle the socket is usually place in or near fuse box, it requires a special reading apparatus , now you have descibed further i would def say its the starter motoe ,next time it wont start give the starter a few firm hits with a rawhide mallet this can usually free the stuck solenoid/bendix spring and it shoud start ,if this geys engine started then change starter.
Thank you for your help, appreciated.
