Question about 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse
I had oil in my #1 spark plug well and car wouldn't start. I changed plugs and replaced valve cover gasket as well as the alternator relay. Car was starting when I got a jump but when the jumper cables were taken of the car would die.
Sounds like either your battery is not good or your alternator is weak.

SOURCE: CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON
What year is your car and what engine? That makes a lot of difference. What the pulses should indicate is a code 12 is stored (code 55 is usually an "all clear" code, meaning that the ECU is done reading out the codes that are stored). If you got only a 55, it would mean you have no codes. 1255 means that 12 is the only code you have stored.

SOURCE: 96 eclipse need more info..
This sounds like the timing belt is shot. Remove the distributor cap, have your helper crank the engine. Is the rotor turning?? If not, then it is the timing belt. Some engines are rather forgiving when the belt breaks, some will get bent valves. Frankster016
