My guess, you changed it and guessed at the timing?
the G16 engines time to #4 firing. not #1. sorry, tis a fact
8v or 16v., they time different (tension steps are diffr)
how to do it and every way to undo , all the wrong ways.

if you remove the cam cog wheel, do not use the false marks , a hopeless path.

nore the false keyway in the cam cog. 2 things are false. they used ONE cog for 2 engines. a 3 cyl and a 4cyl.

Timing belt broke, does this car have a free floating engine

I'm not sure what you mean by "a free floating engine".
If your engine still runs you most likely broke the serpintine belt not the timing belt.
If you broke your timing belt you need to have your engine check over carefully. When the timing belt breaks the valve stop moving but the pistons keep going for a few revolutions. This usually ends up damaging your valves and/or your pistons. On rare occassions it can sometimes even damage the
head(s) or block.
DO NOT TRY TO START THE ENGINE BEFORE IT'S REPAIRED, THIS WILL RESULT IN MORE DAMAGE!
If you're planning on fixing this yourself you need to pay careful attention to the timing, you can have the timing marks perfectly aligned and still be off by 180°.
Once you have the belt fixed you'll need to do a compression test to see if there is any damage to the engine. If you have a difference of more than 10% on any cyclinder you'll need to take the head(s) off and check for damage.
If you want further help with this you can contact me through this web site.

Engine timing mark diagram

timing on all camshaft im familiar with have a dot stamped on the gear and one on the adjacent gear it meshes with, the trick is to get the two dots to line up with each other for proper timing.
the camshaft runs 2:1 to the crankshaft, so if it wont run, that means your 180 degrees off. line everything back up the dots that is, take the belt off and rotate the cam 360 until the dots are in line again and reinstall the belt.
should fix you up.
hope this helps, good luck

Timing mark

Cam has a "V". Crank has a keyway. Both should be directly on top of the pullys toward the top of the engine. This is an interference engine. Do not force. After replacing the timing belt, turn the crank by ratchet (clockwise) two complete turns to assure. Should feel some resistence but not more than you can easily overcome. If it stops dead and you KNOW it's "just not right" you are 180 out and need to start over.
