It's common for that to happen on start up. If you're not getting oil to the top under acceleration then that's of concern. See if you have gunk built up in the head and oil cap. If you do then start with the cheapest fix which would be to have the oil system flushed out with a detergent. If no go there then you probably need to replace the oil pump.

No oil to top of motor but 45lb at gauge rattels real loud

didnt specify yr-make -model-engine size engine but most engines like im saying most engines oil pump is at bottom of engine in the oil pan the oil pressure sensor may be sending out correct pressure but if sensor is down by filter/pump area thats where your going to get your reading ---the noise is your heads starving for oil problem can be sludge clogging oil from getting up to head ---oil filter collapse not correct oil for the vehicle or oil pump failing

1993 Isuzu Rodeo oil not going to top of motor after replacing head gasket?

Wrong Head Gasket or installed wrong

Other possible problems

Given it is over 20 years old, do you really
want to invest even the time into working on it?

Who did the engine repairs, couldn't be a repair shop
or it would have acted up before you got it back!

Top part of engine isnt getting oil. motor is oiling up to the head but isnt going any further

Your problem sounds like an oil pump. The lower part of the engine stays lubricated due to moving parts slinging oil around, but will not make it to the top portion of your engine.

I have knocking on top of the motor we've put oil in it and nothing works what could it be

Motor oil in your radiator may be a sign that you have a blown head gasket or even worse a cracked head. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a 1997 dodge stratus 2.4 155,000miles oil is clean coolent clean and holding dose not run hot i seem to use 1qrt of oil every 1200 miles exhaust is blue sometimes heavyer than others the cat is

does it seem to be a little bit noisy at times? if the oil is gathering at the top, it could be a leaky seal near the top, it might be leaking somewhere near the valve train on the heads. it could also be the head gaskets which if your engine's heads arent hard to get to, it might be worth your time to replace them yourself. the gaskets are cheap its the labor hours that usually makes this job reach deep into your wallet. sometimes investing in a model specific shop manual (usually about $100) which will give you very detailed, step by step instructions on how to replace whatever is bad. but this sounds like a leaky seal somewhere and since its gathering on the top, check it from the top down.

Hi i have a 2004 vwlt 2.5tdi when the engine gets warm theres a tapping/rattle from top of head i seem to be worse as you let of the throttle,no smoke or lost of power any suggestion cheers jeff

MOTOR IS NOT GETTING ENOUGH OIL TO THE TOP END TO LUBRICATE VALVES AND LIFTERS. POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS; OIL PUMP NEEDS REPLACED, ENGINE NEEDS FLUSHED, OIL AND FILTER CHANGE. BAD RESULT MOTOR WILL EVENTUALLY BLOW UP IF NOT ATTENDED TO SOON.

Where is the oil pan drain plug on a 2005 sunfire

A 2003-05 Sunfire most likely has the Ecotec 2.2 motor. The filter is a cartridge element type which is located on the forward side of the engine on the drivers side; (below and slightly left of the power steering reservoir).

The oil filter is located under (inside) a black cover about 3-4 inches around and has a large hex head nut molded on top of it, to fit a socket on it. When replacing the oil filter element, press the tipped O-ring side of the filter down into the filter cavity until it locks in place. Then place the cover on top and tighten it.

The cover will automatically lock onto the top section of the oil element as it is being tightened. The drain plug is pretty standard and on the oil pan. However, most people are accustomed to a metal oil pan, and when viewing the Ecotec motor they confuse the metal TRANSMISSION pan as the motor oil pan.

The motor oil pan is actually aluminum, and looks like a continuation of the upper motor. For that reason, you don't "see" an oil pan. Knowing this fact, the oil drain plug is now easy to locate. Look at the far passenger side of the metal transmission oil pan. Now look at the very front of that section of the transmission oil pan and follow that ''line of sight'' until you reach the bottom of the aluminum motor (''oil pan''). The oil drain plug is right there, with it's head facing towards the transmission oil pan.

The drain plug (on a 2005 Sunfire) requires a 15mm wrench/socket; and has a built in rubber seal, which should be lubricated with oil before tightening.

1999 ford winstar engine problem

Either the heads are cracked, the cylinder walls are cracked, or the head gaskets didn't seal properly. You need to check your catalytic converter/exhaust, there probably is what caused the problem & accounts for why the smoke is coming out of the top of the motor, it can't escape through the exhaust due to the blockage.

good luck,

sometimes a used motor is less expensive than repairing one that is bad & especially if you get a warranty.

Oil appearing in radiator, 4afe engine, is there awater gallery behind oil pump? checked head gasket looked fine

Still can be a cracked head gasket. Unless you are creating to much pressure in your engine. Just because you do not see any oil leaks does not mean that the head gasket could not be cracked

My 1996 Dodge avenger's exhaust is smoking. Checked the motor oil. was low, topped up. Car still blows out a rapid amount of smoke. Any ideas why or things I could check?

Hello, what color is the smoke? If it's white in color your burning antifreeze. If your burning antifreeze the most common problems are a bad head gasket or cracked head.
If the smoke is blue in color your burning oil. There are many reasons to why you could be burning oil, all of which mean one of three things. You can either rebuild the motor, replace the motor, or drive it with it burning oil and check your oil level periodicaly.
There isn't really anything you can do to check what is the root of your cause with out disassembly of the motor. There is a tall tale sign of a bad head gasket or cracked head and that is your oil will have a milky color and texture to it or your coolant will have an oil slick on the top when you take off the radiator cap. This doesn't always happen with a bad head gasket or cracked head but it is one way to generally tell.
